I've heard it spoken of on the pages, so I know that some of you will be aware of the magnificence of the above metioned pub.
Distressingly some bastards called Swan housing have put in an application to knock down the adjoining stepney's nightclub, complete with its unique late seventies light up dancefloor to build some flats. Now I'm sure the is a need for new housing but there are masses of other suitable sites in the immediate vicinity for "14 affordable housing units, 9 x 1 bedroom and 5 x 2 bedroom flats for rental and shared ownership" and any gains will be far outweighed buy the loss of Stepney's and its effect on The George.
From an architectural heritage point of view the George is a very special mid victorian building grade2 listed whose impostion on the street scene will be dwarved by the shiney plasterboard shoeboxes (artists impressions are available as part of the planning applications PA/07/00014 andPA/07/00015 - links below). Even more importantly stepney's itself is as far as I know a totally unique example of late seveneties east-end chic - it is in itself a building which should be preserved and continue to be used as part of the East-Ends cultural heritage - much like the rivoli ballrooms in brockley are.
The George itself will have its activities curtailed so much by the presence of neighbours with a party wall that I can't see how will be able to continue to hold such bawdy, tumbling soirees of joy which it currently provides in the future. THis would be a massive loss, the surrounding area is littered with carcusses of east end boozers, (why don't they build their flats on them???) and the George really is one of the only ones I know of round there that still has any real character and is still used by people of all ages for a good old fucking knees-up of a weekend. Its not just a pub either, its a theatre, an art gallery, a live venue and Pauline cooks Christmas dinners for the locals every year. In a few years it really has returned to the centre of the community and under these proposals, it is difficult to see how it can survive - so then you'll have a beautiful grade II listed pub, which can no longer operate as a pub beacuse some fool has erected pokey, characterless flats alongside it.
So If anyone out there has any experience of fighting planning applications, perhaps even winning and could lend any advice that would be brilliant. And if anyone has had any experiences of swan housing that would be helpful too. We really feel we have an argument and that there is a logical case that these plans will be to the detriment of the area and the community.
And If anyone fancies writing a letterto the planning officer that would be magnificent.
In the very least if you know the pub and give a fuck you could sign the petition
http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/SAVEEASTENDTREASURE/
if you do please leave a comment - it makes a big difference.
Any other advice, support is greatly apprecited - the initial consultation period ends on the 23 jan - we at least hope to put this concept of "consultation" to the test.
Thank you.
