These arguments are always about taste and opinion. 'I don't like the Beatles' is a perfectly fair position to take.

Obviously you're free to criticise people for their views if you like, but your stuff about 'validity' makes you seem like a self appointed arbiter of some sort of objective viewpoint, in an argument where it doesn't really wash, IMO.

2) how can you tell the difference between sheer bloody prejudice and a strongly held opinion

I've met too many people in the past who have held a completley arbitrary Beatles-hating stance (or Presley, country music, etc). Some of them were my friends - so I knew if it was prejudice or not. Plenty will admit that it is. I'm convinced that when someone comes on a Macca discussion and mentions the Frog Chorus its tedious, pointless as not even McCartney fans like that stuff, and clearly not the mark of someone who knows much about MacCartney's output.
