Macc Lads

If a band sings racist songs, tells racist jokes on stage and has a large following amongst racist right-wing skinheads and football casuals (notably without making any effort to counter this) well, other than signing to Blood & honour records and playing David Copeland benefit gigs i don't really see what else they can do to make themselves more racist
i thought this summed it up

Joy Division had a massive right wing following. .

utter nonsense.

As did GBH (a band noted for being extremely homophobic)..

example please. just one single example. i certainly can't think of one. crap music but nice people form all my experiences of meeting them.

Mud, the Glitter band, the Sweet and Slade were loved by football hooligans. .

so what? who said anything about football hooligans? certainly quite a few black folk in a lot of football firms or so i undertand it. certainly more than i'd imagine in a Macc Lads audience anyway.

What like the original "Get Back" to which Macca seems more than enthusiastic about shouting "raschist" words into his microphone.

ah! you mean the Enoch Powell studio outtake parody? Oh yes, fully paid up Powellite members, the lot of them. That Warren Mitchell too.

FFS man, if you're gonna argue a case at least use some credible facts to back up your position.

I once knew a lovely lady from Maccelsfield, her name was Emma and she would blush with pride at the mention of the Macc Lads.

Nowadays she's living in Kingston-Upon-Thames with her family, but she's still ace and she still chuckles at those Macc Lads tapes.

The ties that bind, eh?

Wonder if she ever came up to Newcastle Mayfair? Saw a lass there once with a Macc Lads tshirt on and i asked if she was Charlotte! Luckily she had a sense of humour...

I managed to avoid the Macc Lads apart from listening to an album somebody let me have, they didn't make much of an impression either way.

For offensive songs and good music try The Blood's album, False Gestures for a Devious Public. Classic

That really is quite laughably poor, man. The only thing i found funny about macc lads was 'beer chips sex gravy' so i used it as me interests on here. Can't say hand-on-heart i've ever bothered my ears with them.

Football hooligan gangs are known to be far more likely to belong to far right groups than any other political associations. And as for black people being in some of them. I have seen a couple of black faces within the SCL - who are directly connected to the National Front.

And the point about the Beatles is not the parody itself, but the enthusiasm Paul McCartney seems to be showing whilst saying so called racist words. I guess they are a "classic" band so can never be compared with the Macc Lads.

The fact isn't that I believe the Beatles to be racist, but that the Macc Lads are not necessarily so. And even if they were, who cares? You don't like their music? fine. That's taste. But to bring the race card into other people's choice of art is not just cheap, but turns you into the kind of lowlife who is willing to turn individuals into second class victims merely to prove quite an offensive point of view. And underneath that point lurks a far more sinister form of "racism" than that you so enthusiastically describe.

I think they are a load of cock, ditto Manning.

To say that they are good 'northern working class humour' means either:

A) You have never been up north or met more than one northern person
B) Your sense of humour stopped developing when you were 12

or

C) Both of the above.

Or maybe the difference between Salfordian culture and that of Macclesfield really is that different. I doubt it though.

hmmm..perhaps you should put that a poll? I'm no beatles fan myself but I have a sneaking suspicion they may prove more popular than the Macc Lads.

:confused::confused::confused:

that is possibly one of the most deranged postings i have EVER read on U75.

Apparently the Cardinal keeps talking about it but tries to get acoustic gigs on the promise there'll be a full band

....There is some dispute over who is using the name and who is entitled to use it? I met the bass player and the drummer for beer at Denmark Hill. Nice guys. I hope they gig again. I was disappointed as I had bought the first album when I was 16 (1983?).

The man known as Al O'Peesha in the Macc lads died a few years back, apparently due to real bad stomach problems after becoming addicted to prescription drugs. He was a journalist, I sure wish I could find some of his articles so I could better judge what the real opinions of certain key band members may have been:

Aged 17 some of my best friends were very into the Macc lads, they didnt take them seriously. I thought they were a breath of stale air, which felt strangely fresh at the time due to how stale the mainstream was, but I didnt give it too much thought. I guess at the time it felt like they were pushing some sort of boundaries, there was a challenge to their music that was preferable to the challenge of listening to Brian Adams at number one for god knows how many weeks. I cant imagine ever going to one of their gigs, as Im the sort of person who would eat an Icecream at a Pantera concert. Im not sure if I could listen to their music now without the crapness of it, and the themes, getting to me. Frank Zappa and the Tiger Lillies and Williams Shatners attempts at singing are where I evolved to.

Just found this video of some local TV news about the Macc Lads back in the day, its funny whether you like them or hate them because its dated local tv with 80's tory and police attitudes:

The last i heard was 6 years ago there was a metal festival planned in Newcastle , and they pulled out , rumour has it Nuttley had health problems or summit? The whole festival got cancelled cos they were the only band people wanted to see
