Macbooks so why do I want one ?

I'd feel like I had to explain or apologise if I ever got it out in public... "but I'm not a poser! work paid!".

Imagine using it in Starbucks... oh god :(

I see where yoru coming from and a promising beginning to your point. You start off with not a poser and then go on to using a laptop at starbucks .

And I think thats the flaw in your post.
Cos doesn't using a laptop at starbucks just make someone a poncey wanker full stop :D

I'd feel like I was only a Porsche away from being a cunt.
If it was a vaio all it would need is a shemagh

I can't see any reason why I would want to run more than one OS on my laptop. All the programs I need are available on the one OS, so why would I want to faff about with multiple boot options?

If you like to use a mac the ability to run the odd pc thing is useful. You don't have to multiple boot if you use VM fusion. The windows programmes open in a separate box on screen (full screen if you need) and work at same time. If it crashes it disappears like a program and not like a machine crash. I find it good to have the ability to run the odd windows stuff. I have when needed an XP and a vista machine. I still haven't got the dos one to work which is a shame as I have an old engineering program i'd like to run which won't work under XP. The reboot time of the XP machine in VM fusion is faster than than any real hardware machine I've come across. Even if you were just running windows stuff I'd rather have my macbook with VM fusions than a PC laptop.

Oh I never go into Starbucks - I don't like coffee - I was just using it as the ultimate example. Worry not.

What can't you do on a cheapo XP laptop - with all the tons of freeware apps available - that you can do on an Ubuntu machine then?
Stay free of internet nasties, spyware and viruses without having to install extra software which may itself be suspect.

Audit your application software and os down to the metal.

Have complete control over the development environment.

Script repetitive keyboard/mouse tasks to run automatically (and in a fraction of the time).

Have the system and all your application software kept up to date from a single trusted source, with a few clicks of the mouse.

Escape from forced obsolescence and the ms churn cycle.

Anyway, for how long will ms continue to support xp? The monopolist will dump it sooner or later and try to force folks to buy their system all over again.

I'd.ve thought you'd've known this stuff by now, tbh.

Not an issue. Takes seconds to install auto-updating anti-virus software.

Windows is massively customisable.

Fat lot of good if it's incapable of running proper graphics programs like Photoshop. Besides, most Windows programs will offer updates when available.

Most. And each one from a different site each of which suffers some risk of compromise.

Ubuntu is secure right from the get go. That's different and better.

It and all your application software is kept updated from a single secure source. That's different and better.

SOB! I want one right now because I just lost my entire Genetics review on Microsoft word. Vista has like a million updates a week and default shuts your computer down and restarts it (wtf) who defaults an automatic shutdown of all the programs your running? that on top of the fact it said it was auto-saving every 5 minutes, if I stopped working at midnight and it restarted at 3am...wheres all my bloody work! sob

If you're in Brixton you can usually pick up a live CD of Ubuntu linux (presently "Hardy Heron" version 8.04 LTS) for a fiver from the "Mobile X-pert" stall in Reliance Arcade right next door to Woolworth's.

And yes, Ubuntu puts you in control. It won't update unless you tell it too, and never forces a reboot after an update.

Did you know the Ubuntu graphics program "the Gimp" (great name there guys ) was used to in the making of Harry Potter. There's nothing "improper" about the Gimp.

except the freakin' name, of course.

That's what I'm told, but mainly by folks who are well versed in the ps interface, so it's hard to be sure how much that influences their assessment. I'd certainly steer professional photographers and graphic artists towards ps, just because the gimp doesn't do cmyk (for legal licensing reasons, I understand).

But if you're not already fluent in ps, and have the needs of a typical home or small business user, the gimp is more than adequate. And it won't cost you hundreds of pounds. In fact, it's free with the system, so mustn't grumble :D

It'll sort your web graphics just fine.

Last time I used the gimp on windows, I could drag a document window ON TOP of a toolbar. I'm sure things are better now though :)

Or PM me, promise me a fiver, and I'll pop a CD in the post to you tomorrow :)

I thought you were selling em for a fitty. . .
I've paypal'd the money over now

Seriously though.

An air one would be handy for work and the stuff I have to do. I can run a windows version on it if I need to. . I'm sure I can think of more.

I have a macbook and I love it, I've been amiga-PC-mac and the mac works more fluently than any PC I've used, I use it for graphics and music and my macbook 2.16 duo core with 2gb ram runs logic faultlessly and photoshop too.

I would have got a pro but they don't do them in a 13" screen which is fail.

It's certainly a good way of going about things though. Centralised repositories really are one of Linux's big USPs when it comes to user experience.

Could you give some examples of these 'compromises' I should be suffering from downloading upgrades from official sites, please, because I've never, ever suffered any problems at all - and I've downloaded hundreds (if not thousands) of programs and updates over the years? It's not better if the apps aren't as good.

could you tell us how much money you have spent on these thousands of programs and updates, if any, please?

I must admit photoshop runs far more fluently on my macbook than it does on my friends Dell inspiron running Vista that has a faster processor and has double the memory of mine.

The GIMP does everything that anybody reading this thread needs to do, unless they already know what it is that it can't. By which I mean, the functions that it doesn't have are obscure and specialised, and people needing them will already know what they are.

I've seen some utter drivel posted by people that I know are professionals about how Photoshop is absolutely necessary because the GIMP can't do X Y and Z, which it can - purely because those people are completely locked into their "workflow", which is fine for them if they want to keep using the same app but they shouldn't be advising newcomers on that basis.
