Macbook Air vs Thinkpad X300

Not once I have I ever done this. I've also rarely had to use the DVD drive on my current laptop. All data has come via online or usb drive...

I found it really fustraiting sometimes not having a DVD burner on my laptop, but now I have a desktop as well, I think I could live without a drive all together. When the current machine laptop dies (which I've been expecting for years) I'll be thinking more EEE pc type price range rather then Macbook Air.

And if it's a dodgy red nipple vs a generous multitouch trackin pad, it's an even easier decision
Actually, the Thinkpad has a touchpad and a red nipple and *two* sets of *two* mouse buttons, which I believe pwns the Air on that particular score.

There's also a fingerprint biometric security module, Gigabit Ethernet, ExpressCard slot, Verizon EV-DO Rev A, Cingular HSDPA and WiMAX connectivity.

Not bad. Not bad at all.

Speaking as someone who's owned a ultraportable laptop without a built in DVD/CD drive for 4 years I can tell you it's a fucking annoying omission. Sure, the external drive is wafer thin and light, but I've lost count the amount of times I've forgotten to pack it.

I'll never buy a laptop without a built in drive again, even if it adds 0.2m to the width.

I really dislike the design on Thinkpads. It looks like they settled on it just after three-button mice came out, and haven't bothered to update it since :(

But yeah, the Thinkpad over the Air.

I own a few Thinkpads. My choice every time!

The best analysis I've seen of the Mac Air is that it's the equivalent to a convertable. Not huguly practical for everyone, but still handy for some tasks. If you've got two kids and a wife you want want it, or at least have it for weekends. If you're single and don't expect to be carrying large loads its fine... :D

Excellent way of putting it!

I dont think I've ever installed something one the move.

Ok, maybe not install, but more to the point when someone gives you some files to load up or a powerpoint presentation on a CD-ROM or a DVD.

Even thou USB pens are cheap these days I still don't think we've reached the days of people handing out their presentation material on USB pens.

I dunno, I thought we were there already!

My company has been doing that for a while... And its certainly been the case for others since around 2002ish...

TBH... I can't remember someone giving me any marketing info in the form of CDs for a while... And anything is pretty much emailable or downloadable anyway these days...

In some environments, the lack of a removable-media drive might be seen as a security benefit :)

True, but as a lot of software is delivered on CD or DVD for installation, it's still a significant concern for many IT departments.

My first laptop was a second-hand Duo 280c... (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PowerBook_Duo) Didn't have a CD drive or a floppy drive and only communicated through either AppleTalk networks or a 14.4 Modem.

It was great for writing Uni assignments and surfing the "Information Super-highway" as we called it in 1997... :D

This is quite amusing:

Apple product cycle

Steve Jobs spends the first half-hour of his keynote crowing about how many iPods shipped during the previous six months and how many “native applications” have been developed for OS X. Attempting to appear as though it’s just an afterthought, he finally introduces the new Apple product. The product has sleek, clean lines, a diminutive form factor, and less than half of the useful features that everyone was expecting. Jobs announces that the product is available “immediately.”

Five minutes later, the new product appears on the online Apple store. Orders have an estimated ship date that is four weeks away.
