Mac OS X

You'll need to install the proper codec components to ~/Library/Quicktime.

I think 3ivx will do it and for Microsoft Windows movies (.wmv?) there's Flip4Mac.

I had to make a folder ~/Library/Quicktime as there wasn't a quicktime folder in Library and have installed the codec, supposedly I have to install divx as well but that install stops on the part where it's supposed to find a target drive,,,grrr

There are two library locations aren't there? There's one for the user account and one for the system drive. My Quicktime components are all in the system library but I don't know if (or how) this makes any difference.

It won't allow me to put them in the system library,,,,grrrr

Weird.....

I would still recommend VLC in any case - your one-stop movie viewer.

I am still getting used to OSX having been an MS man since forever.

On the whole I love it though.....

Not sure why people have it in for "Finder" either - works fine for me!

And Widgets =

I have VLC installed, just been using it as my MP3 player, I'll give it a bash as my video player also,

Yeah, I use VLC all the time as my primary video player on the Mac - Quicktime is a bit shit with video, apart from, er, Quicktime video of course.

If VLC doesn't play something, there's always Mplayer, which is much nicer to use on OS X than Windows. Xineplayer is my last resort if Mplayer doesn't work. Past that I just assume it must be crap anyway.

I noticed how poor VLC performed when playing back H264 codec (720p) on the PC. Staggering difference when it came to using an alternative player. Is this the case on the Mac?

I wouldn't trust my XP machine as a primary store - sooner get some Firewire drives and bung the data on there.

Hmm, maybe that's a good idea then....but we're talking about a terrabyte of data here, (I'm gonna *borrow* a mate's collection ;) ) so that'd be a serious dent in the ol' purse for an external HDD wouldn't it?!?!

God they've come down in price since I last looked, then.

Well, I mean 500quid is still loads, but not for a terrabyte I guess.

Final word of warning: Mac Finder is the most sucky major file browser on any OS...

So, are you going to qualify that comment...? Seeing as Xp's Explorer is the only one of the file browsers that runs as a su equivilent *all* the time...?

I just checked on Scan, and the Lacie 1TB tripple-interface (firewire 400/800 & USB2) with 16mb-cache is at £371, inc VAT. For £340, you get the same thing, but with 8mb cache.

MiniG drives are the nicest I've used, very reliable, very quick.
