To make Quicktime play anything, install perian.

http://perian.org/

it supports:

AVI, FLV, and MKV file formats
MS-MPEG4 v1 & v2, DivX, 3ivX, H.264, FLV1, FSV1, VP6, H263I, VP3, HuffYUV, FFVHuff, MPEG1 & MPEG2 Video, Fraps, Windows Media Audio v1 & v2, Flash ADPCM, Xiph Vorbis (in Matroska), MPEG Layer II Audio
AVI support for: AAC, AC3 Audio, H.264, MPEG4, and VBR MP3
Subtitle support for SSA and SRT

I've found this to be the best way of doing things. it means that you get live previews in the finder fr example, and you only ever need to have one media player open.

PS: Thank Fuck apple finally relented and let non-pro quicktime do fullscreen. That was one of the most pig headed things.

init - finally I can stop converting all my mac movs to Windows so that the PC people can display them on the projector...

Cheers for that link.

Also Bosky have you tried niceplayer? it's a new one that's not too bad.

Replying to an old post, I know, but many thanks to the Perian link. It's an absolute revelation.

I still use VLC in preference to Perianising Quicktime. Much better IMO and more efficient and playing .264 HD content.

it's been a few years now (probably at least 3) but back in the day it just didn't handle softsubs that well in some cases ... fonts were weird lines overlapped or went off the screen etc

it was only with some shows but it was enough to make it not worth my while using

plus the interface although powerful was a bit clunky

but i'm on a pc so i just stick with mpc and cccp
