Agreed.

D-Ream are a close second...."Things can only get better....." As played when Tony Blair took to power in 97.
Shit anyway, but doomed by being forever tainted with visions of Prescott et al. "singing along" ... and all that followed :(

M-people were the pet project of DJ Mike Pickering, erstwhile Hacienda DJ and (Northern) soul afficianado. Somewhere along the line he took a great gobful of Satan's cock and the rest is history.

For everyone who still thinks manchester is the coolest place on the planet, i have two words.

Mick.

Hucknall.

:p

Simply Red are not that bad

There is a MK (Mark Kinchen) mix of "Excited" which is really , really good , but as pointed out above , they SUCK ! (what am I doing on this thread ?)

Mark Kinchen was one of the best writer/programmers around in '89/'90.

Hearing that he worked for M-People has plopped him way down in my estimations though.

Probably the most awful band in the world. I'd sooner listen to the entire back catalogue of Gwar than just one solitary gargled note from that bellowing f**kpig M-People lead singer Heather.

It's voices like hers that make me envy the deaf.

Music for Crapital FM listeners who think music is just the noisy bit inbetween traffic reports.

Everyone who bought their LP, or a Lighthouse Family LP, should really be culled in some kind of Darwinian preventative measure to stop the bland and terminal Mondeo-driving mundane gene from infesting humanity.

God, I feel sickened even responding to this thread.

:(

 come here and say that !

(I'm a 6'2 200lb urban mountain-biker btw and I thump Mondeos ;) )

Heather can sing better than you or I .. or most of the teenage pop idols come to that - and she's a rather scrumptious woman too - so there :p

My arse can sing better than her vocal chords.

She sounds like Marge Simpson on steroids.

They were shite but it was still bloody funny when they beat Blur to the Mercury Music Prize that year. I bet Albarn's never forgiven them.

Yeah I bet his multi-million pound bank balance is of little consolation when he came so close to trumping M People at some pointless award ceremony in 199-something :D

You'd be surprised. I remember Alex James writing this article in the Guardian a couple of years back saying how shit and worthless the Mercury Music Prize was. He was particularly scathing about M People, failing to mention precisely why their victory had so upset him.

how do you think I felt when I bought the thing ? As it was an import , I pulled the shrink-wrap off and turned it around so it was on the back of the sleeve (thus being upside down if you see what I mean) just so I wouln't have to look at the bloody band !

I too thought MK was Dog spelt backwards , but it started going down hill after the nightcrawlers track. I have a LOT of his stuff.

their finest hour?

the moment they stopped torturing us.

But it's the horror that never ends. Picture the scene at last year's RESPECT (or whatever they call it now): a hefty crowd waiting for the last headline acts of KRS-1 and Horace Andy. Rumours were abounding that KRS was a no show, but the people were waiting the sweet tones of Horace's reggae.

And then - af5ter much delay - the mc came up with an annoucement:

'Ladies and Gentlemen. The last act. The lady's whose voice won us the olympics....

....Heather Small.'

Cue crowds of people leaving, crushing each other in their haste to leave, swearing loudly, trampling children in their panic. And slowly the pain starts, no matter how close to the park's exits you made it to, that foghorn voice came washing over you, a whale-like tone that plunged a whole section of Sarf London into utter despair.

Search for the hero? I was more looking for something to shoot Seb Coe and Livingstone with. Winning the olympics was one thing, resurrecting this hoarse-throated horror was another...

This thread is a true inspiration to me, i've just got ableton live for my laptop and I now feel it is one of my missions in life to do a jungle mash up of an M People track. I'm gonna sit and learn ableton to death now and I shall not cease until this deed is done :D .
