"Anyways, I speak for myself here but I -think- that most ppl that really over extoll GNU/Linux and Free-ness are Microsoft refugees."

I believe you are a software developer, are you defending MSoft , because you develop on it for a living?

heh - lobster, I'm a wanna be software developer. Get it right mate. Working full-time in an unrelated industry. I want to break into devel. I use *nix as my only/primary OS at home. I made that comment about "refugees" because up untill three years ago I'd never really heard of *nix. I've even found myself "window" bashing.

I hope Ms and there "Trusted computing" ideas do not go to production, i doubt AMD would follow.
It could mean no alternative Os or even gcc.

I suppose Intel would be the only collaborators.

The next time that I come across a free old PC, I'm going to build it up from scratch using Linux - not sure which operating system yet.
Is it possible to build a fully functioning PC with only open source?

Yes.

with a old pc , the instructions to code a module should all be avilable, winmodems are the exception, perhaps you can use a wrapper, like so many new wifi cards.

The fritz chip that microsft like talking about could be obstacle although wikipedia mentions that linux compatibility is in development, weather that includes all "trusted computing" time will tell.

It would be a serious block to creativity if only one OS would work.

Its a bit like buying writing paper and not being able to write freely.

IIRC AMD are already a part of this. It'd be an utterly braindead idea not to because at some point Windows will become a platform that will require "trusted" hardware to do rpetty much anything, and if Intel were the only people making TCP chips then only Intel CPU's could be used in Windows machines.

Don't forget that Linux also supports the trusted computing platform too, just in a different way. Linux's idea of trusted computing (as well as being voluntary - although eventually you'll prolly need a TCP-compliant PC to access the net) is not allowing dodgy binaries to run, whereas MS's idea of trusted computing is not allowing the user to do anything that might hurt their bottom line.

thanks stdPikachu for verying that,
the FSF and open source population would not bare when the day comes that we all have to use MS products.

"TCP-compliant PC to access the net"

hopefully linux and bsd varients will support those computers, One thing that i am hoping will not happen is that only one linux distro will be available and supported. ie Red hat, as its the biggest corporate linux distro, which is not really a threat to MS in the sense, they could work together, or ms buys them out, and will be able to expand the market "hey windows haters, we have linux o that you can by from us".

Thankfully, the scenario you present is unlikely. Micorsoft is pretty much the only company who has anything to gain from seeing Linux lose out, all of the otehr members of the TCP consortium have a vested interest in getting TCP supported by as many platforms as possible.

The difference is all in the implementation. Linux, and UNIX in general, work on the assumption that you are (or are at least able to be) in complete control of the computer, and TCP is just another means of securing it (a bit like NX on steroids). MS and the content industry take the angle that no-one should be in complete control of a computer except them, since all computer users are unclean commie-hippie-pinko-atheist-liberal criminals who are too stupid or too criminally insane to think for themselves. That level of lock-in can only be true with the hood-welded-shut colsed source development model, since ther will always be some kernel hacker who'll introduce a "TCP = off" switch into the kernel even if Linus turns into Bill Gates' evil twin.

In any case, if RedHat do decide to support TCP in some sort of underhand way they'll either have to release the changes they made to the kernel or stop using the Linux kernel altogether (unless they wanted to pull an SCO), and fork BSD instead. There are alot of companies invested heavily in Linux who could squash RedHat easily if they wanted to, IBM being one of them.

Why do you need a full set of Office, Adobe, Macrovision etc etc in a home environment?
Because my penis is very, very small. :D I suppose I don't need it but i do want it. I hate to feel that I am being restricted by the software companies. i just love the idea that i could use their apps if i wanted to. Occasionaly i tinker around .

This trick will make microsoft think you have a genuine windows.
After having gone through windows validation and been told you have a dodgy copy do this...

In fact once you run the validation again whilst trying to download something, such as the new anti-spyware beta, it will thank you for using genuine windows!

PS. To create the blank "data.dat" file just make an empty .txt file using notebook and rename it to data.dat .

This method has the advantage over the other one in that rather than avoiding microsoft checking your PC it makes Microsoft think your PC is clean as a whistle. :D

Note: this doesn't work if you have a corporate copy.

I have a corporate copy and it worked. Something may have changed now because a few people told me it didn`t work for them recently.

I jus let mine do it...I got bored of saying don't...bit of a suicide wish in me atm...soooooooo what'll happen next you lot? :)

Mine came up saying it was a copy licensed for companies wanting to do large installations and wouldnt let me do it. Tried the adding data.dat file and that doesnt work either.

PartII...so I go to the Windows Update Site jus now via Control Panel>Securtiy>Link...anyway It tell me after a scan that I am set to Update Auto...and stuuuuff...then offer an Update...the Validation Tool alone...0kb in size....eh?....and the promise that once installed it cannot be uninstalled etc...so disable Auto Update....I thought it would have been auto'ed already...ffing Windows!

Maybe I should get off the Net for a bit and do a backup before I do get validated?...er...has anyone else got any interesting links to articles elsewhere about this...before I lose another day to reading about 10,000 other related things via searches.?.. :D

wouldnt let me do it.
do what?

you need " Windows.Genuine.Advantage.Validation.Tool.Patch-TWK" it works with no problems at all. for info.. google link... http://tinyurl.com/9r2sg
and for file.[note.Avast! shows up a false positive trojan warning with this file.. for confirmation this is not a virus scan with the highly respected trend housecall ].. http://tinyurl.com/cgwly (scroll to bottom of page and click on free) then click on "download" at bottom of next page.
Once you have the file (from info.)

1. Unzip, Unrar.
2. Locate \WINDOWS\system32\LegitCheckControl.dll
3. Close all iexplorer windows, run twk-winupdatepatch.exe .
4. Enjoy

Yes.

when you unzipped the zip file you got another zip file plus .nfo file. The .nfo file is just a text file giving you info . You can open it with notepad if you want. Anyway, I may as well quote it.
TWK PROUDLY PRESENTS: ³ ³ Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool(KB892130) PATCH ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ Release Date :01.08.2005 ³ TUPE : PATCH ³ ³ Release Size :01xXXMB ³ Protection :CRAP ³ ³ ³ RELEASE NOTES Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool use Windows XP and can't do Windows Update or MS Security Downloads any longer winout legit serial key. What you need is the .exe file which is contained withiin the zip file next to the info. Keep unraring and unzipping the rar or zip files that come up until you get to "twk-winupdatepatch.exe". Run the file once you have located " \WINDOWS\system32\LegitCheckControl.dll " (remove quote marks) (probably the most fool proof way to find the .dll file that is to do a search for "legitcheckcontrol.dll" . What the prog. does is change a small piece of code in the legitcheckcontrol.dll file so that when you go to the microsoft site it thinks you have a genuine copy. If you are still having probs finding the twk-winupdatepatch.exe file just PM me with your e-mail

mmmm...just got told by Anti-Vir there was/is a Trojan therein,,at stage three unzip (twk-winupdatepatch.RAR)...oh dear...here I go! :( ,,,I told it to deny it access/delete etc...dunno if it has?....mmmm...*sigh*...*turns to scan.... :o

I did a full scan with trend micro pc-cillin 2005 on the file which I downloaded especially in order to make sure it didn`t have a virus before I linked to it.
Which anti-virus prog. are you using and what does it say?

PS. Just did another scan with the online scanner at http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ and got back a no worm/virus message. If I was you I would use that scanner and scan the pack you downloaded.

AntiVir says ::: Is the Trojan TR/Barben.1 .... and it keeps saying it is...I'm doing a Housecall doo-dah too and it ain't show it up either...but it's there...it seems undeleteable...moved it to quarentine a few times...but it keeps raising it's head...even if i disable the AntiVir prog/keep moving to quarentine...fun...arse! :D

If the trend housecall is on you won't be able to delete the file. Close that window of internet explorer and you should be able to delete the file.

PS. I have just downloaded the file from the same place unrared it all, checked it and then deleted it and had no problems.

Twudn't delete it even before I started Housecall...mmmm I think this is why i use AntiVir..it tends to work! :D ,,,I've disabled it atm...but it's strange it keeps aggressive warning me...I'll give Housecall the pleasure of a complete scan and then do one with Anti Vir...I have done repeated scan of the RAR in all states ...and the answer comes up the same each time...ow!...and now I can see that Housecall ain't finding it...did a Google a hour or so back looking for the named Trojan...came up with nothing....ow! ow! :(

It happens.
