Pinker you really are being an utter twat. We're talking about lurchers here, pretty much the toughest and naturally healthiest type of dog to walk (run) the earth. Were not talking about over-bred delicate little pedigrees with all of the inherited weaknesses.

I do know of an entire male lurcher. Smooth coat, mostly greyhound. I could ask the owner next time I see her but I think she might think me a little bit odd

Its a matter of size and not inbreeding ..but the fact you find the OPs post in no way bad dog breeding practise says all i need to know

I'm sure the Deerhound breed clubs always tell owners to ask random people for stud dogs

lurchers are one of the most over bred dogs in the U.K .. Rescues are full them
In fact pretty much everyone i know that owns one got it from a rescue ..SO YETS BREED MORE

I don't know any working homes that would take a pup from this breeding

Thing is that to for Shirl this it wasn't really a message to random people on any old board. It was a message to folk she knows, folk she knows are likely to know other folk...........these other folk might be able to put her in touch with the right folk.

I think what's happening here is that Pinker is getting off on sounding like he knows what he's talking about. His desire to puff himself up and gain in self esteem blinds him to a reasonable reading of what Shirl is up to here. Any fool can see that two dogs are not just going to be thrown together willy nilly, but that isn't standing in the way of Pinker's desire to make himself feel clever

is SP saying that it's imoral or wrong to breed a lurcher when there are loads of them dying (sometimes literaly) for homes in rescue centres?

If t hat's his main objection then I think he has a point. The same can be said of people who breed moggy kittens for their friend when there are countless numbers being destroyed because they don't have homes.

On the other hand I do understand that people consider their pets to be members of their familes, and that they often want to breed them regardless of how many strays are put down.

Exactly and thanks to weepiper and this board I'm now intouch with respected breeders of deerhounds and lurchers.
