Lovely French Music

As far as I know, French music isn't an especially rich seam (apart from a lot of sixties stuff) but compared with Switzerland or Austria or Italy or Spain or wherever, I'd say it was pretty rockin' :p

There is a definite 'French sound' tho. Which is what I want, like Serge

Charlotte Gainsbourg's '5.55' was quite good.

And Camille's new album Music Hole (awful title) isn't bad - sung in English, unlike her earlier ones.

Here I am. Don't know what fits the fairly tight description but here's a bit of stuff.

Camille's already been mentioned - Le Fil is IMO the best album. Other female singers, though not as interesting: Françoiz Breut ain't bad, Carla Bruni's OK despite her husband, Keren Ann is probably alright but I've forgotten.

Yann Tiersen is excellent but it's mostly instrumental soundtrack stuff. Some other French film soundtracks are good too but I can't think of any off hand.

Sporto Kantes are well worth checking out for the sort of classy but silly dance/pop that belongs on a summer advert.

M, if you can find anything based on a single letter artist, is good. The 'Le Pop' compilations of French music are a good start if you like that.

Some of the French stuff I like listening to include Laurent Voulzy, Alain Souchon, Michel Polanreff, Robert Charlebois (French canadian), Maxime Leforestier, Nino Ferrer, Claude Francois but they are all quite old and the last two are dead. They are all a bit boppy.

ETA: Jean-Jacques Goldman

Dutronc the band.

April March isn't French but she's in that style and lately sings in French.

Pastel Vespa were doing that French lounge covers thing before Nouvelle Vague and are better at it.

Early Broadcast is a bit Stereolab

I prefer the real Dutronc and his cigar munching ways. If you are going the Dutronc way I would check out the also shit Baby Birkin.

Oh and try supermodel Mareva. She does covers of old faves, not bad i'd say but the best thing about her are her scopitone videos.
This is my favorate, her cover of france gall's (serge gainsbourg) Laisse tomber les filles.

I of course love Serge and Charles Aznavour.

In terms of more recent stuff in a kind of revival-"chanson" type vein, Les Têtes Raides are really good; started off as quite a punk rock-y band in the late 80s, but since then have become a sort of accordion-circus-sounding band who are very fine IMO, with occasional brief diversions back into guitar stuff. I dunno what their most recent album's like, but my favourite is "Gratte Poil" which has been one of my most played albums since i got it a couple of years ago.

(here's a link to a youtube video of one of their songs:
)

Also, in a similar-ish vein (only ish) Arthur H comes off like a French take on Tom Waits. He started off doing late night too-many-cigarettes jazzy songs about ghosts trying to commit suicide, blind people driving etc., & has moved through numerous different sounds since then but is fundamentally bloody good. Saw him play 3 songs live recently, & they seemed more guitar-y but I'm not sure if that's indicative of his current direction or just that gig.

(Also if you like the sound of les tetes raides, there are a number of other bands hanging out in the same musical area, eg. Les Ogres De Barback)

If you want some fun 80s french music, Les Rita Mitsouko's "Le No Comprendo" is absolutely fantastic, & Indochine's "L'aventurier" is also good)

Stereolab have got a couple of mentions -- I recently got a three-disc set of theirs called Oscillons From The Anti-Sun. It's a corker, particularly disc two.

do they really count as french just cos there's one french person in the band tho'? I've always thought of them as primarily a Brit band.
