Lost car keys

So for once owning a BMW is a result. Phoned dealership. Need to go in with V5 and two forms of ID and they order the key which will open the car and then give me a sheet with how to program it. It's only £140 for this.

Massive massive ballache as I've got to get home, cancel plans due to having no car, get back out to the Peak District, but compared to what I thought I'd be going through, I'm so happy!

And what have we learnt from this??? ;) you'll be getting a spare key done soon I'm betting

Glad it's got sorted out, so relatively painlessly

I'm of a generation when you could pop into your local motor factors and get a new key cut for next to nothing so when you say "only" £140 for a key, I baulk and swallow hard

The key for my Jaguar cost about £50 and it's got the electronic gubbins and all that, just not keyless i.e. I have to open the lock with the key not just press the unlock button on a remote - might be worth asking your local key cutting shop if they can do it - but my key is basically a Ford key

For future reference, I find either having a ginormous key ring or tying the key to me somehow helps prevent this type of problem.

Moral of the story is never buy a car without two keys. If you do, get a spare sorted immediately, even if the fuckers (Alfa) in my case want nearly £400 for one!

A spare for my Vauxhall should be cheap because the car can be locked/unlocked mechanically by the key alone. And it is at the moment because the buttons have long since ceased to function.

Don't believe it! My spare Vauxhall key cost £140 from Timpsons. It was cheaper than going to the dealer's.

If they're simple keys without an immobiliser fob (i.e. not a flick-fob, and you use the keys to open the doors and start the car) it's straightforward enough. Just go to a key cutting shop. If it's a more complex affair you'll need to go to a main dealer or one of these outfits.
Even keys for opening doors don't always operate the ignition. The key still needs programming to override the immobilizer.

I've stupidly used the services of a valet company in Gatwick as I had to get home to Ireland urgently on Friday (A friend is terminal and I wanted to see him before he passes) when I got back last night, I waited for two hours only to be told they couldn't find the car. I call them today, they have the car but lost the keys. Anyone any suggestions as to what I should do now other than use my spare set to get the car out of their shitty clutches? Obviously I have to report this to the cops but I've lost my fob and key, luckily it's a old seat so not a keyless car.
