"The Noble Lord is right to point out that the fact that this is not unique, but what I'd like to understand is what action the Government intends taking to ensure that vulnerable community-based football clubs like Dulwich Hamlet® don't fall victim and fall prey to companies like Meadow in the future, because I think there is a serious issue here that needs to be addressed nationally."

In this one, it's the Crossbench exchange which is of interest, rather than any individual quote.

    Lord Kennedy of Southwark [Lab],
"My Lords, Dulwich Hamlet is a much-loved non-league football club based in Southwark, where I grew up. It was founded in 1893, which was 125 years ago.
Does the Noble Lord agree with me that the present situation is tragic, with the club locked out of the ground, and that the best way forward is for all Interested Parties to get around the negotiating table and reach an agreement to get Dulwich Hamlet playing football again at Champion Hill?
    "

    Lord Bourne of Aberystwyth [Con],
    "Yes."

The record of the oral question put by Lord Kennedy, and supplementary questions raised by other Peers, with the Minister for Housing, Communities and Local Government (Lord Bourne of Aberystwyth), can now be read here:

Community Football Clubs - Hansard Online

On a number of occasions, the Minister referred back to the response by the Sports Minister, Tracey Crouch, to points raised by Helen Hayes MP in her adjournment debate on 16th March. Both ministers made clear that the priority in all of this is that a solution should be found that will allow Dulwich Hamlet to return to Champion Hill.

All good news and deftly handled by Roy and the other rather refined rabblers on the red benches.

Just a bit more complicated in this instance I would say. An interesting thing is that the adjournment debate was taken by DCMS rather than MHCLG. We gather there was a tussle over this. Usually, it’s to pass the buck and avoid having to provide a Minister at 2.30pm on a Friday afternoon for a debate that no-one is interested in - apart from the MP who secured it, of course.

Perhaps not this time. It’s clear that DCMS - and Tracey Crouch seems personally committed on this - are taking this on, working with MHCLG, (and the Intellectual Property Office - lol), in order to develop a holistic approach in such situations. It was the MHCLG minister who answered Roy’s questions in the Lords yesterday but he was clearly deferring to DCMS - and not just because it was taken by them in the Commons I think.

That’s good for us because we have at least a small part of the government’s attention on our case - and there’s not much of that to go round at the moment. It’s also good for our other objective in all this - trying to ensure that any clubs in our position, now or in the future, will be better protected.

Fingers crossed - there’s still a long way to go.

    - - - - - - - - -
DCMS - Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport
MHCLG - Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government

Yes, with the Meadow involvement at Dulwich it's Housing & Communities.
The broader aspect is with DCMS and that's where this is going ultimately, some form of national protection.

Don't forget that there isn't a Provincial equivalent of MOL - Green Belt isn't applicable within the urban settings in the Provinces.

Hopefully, an Historic Sports Ground Act will be in the offing.
Champion Hill should get in on the back of that on the basis of the 1948 usage.

It's rather difficult to protect sports grounds within urban settings, per the terms of the HoL debate yesterday, given that money can be made from selling and alternative provision offered.
Those were the terms of the debate, which need to be analysed and agreed before we allow politicians to go proceeding off down that route.

    Nonetheless, it's all rather positive.
