Lord Ahmed goes to jail for texting while driving

Automatic lifetime driving ban might make them think before doing it.

If the thought of crashing and killing someone fails to stop twats texting while driving that will do between fuck all and nothing. :(

I've also heard that he's a bit of a cunt prone to tossing his rattle out of the pram. That's going on the word of people that have met him but nothing first hand. Maybe they just didn't like him. Who knows?

She also killed someone.

Yes, but not because he was texting.

Leaving aside the fact that Ahmed is a bit of a cock anyway, would he have got the same sentence if the accident hadn't happened and he was just caught texting? I somehow doubt it.

Yet the accident occurred 3 miles after he finished pissing about with the phone. At 60 mph that's a full 3 minutes he's been driving perfectly normally and he hits a pissed up driver that's already crashed and spun his car which has alread been hit by a previous vehicle.

The judge has accepted that there's no causal link between the texting and the accident.

I'll be interested to see how many people caught texting or on the dog, go down for 12 weeks. Because that's all this guy has done.

I'm up for banging up dangerous drivers, but this sentence, if not harsh, is certainly inconsitent with sentencing for similar offences.

Seems reasonable to me. The harshest possible punishment still ain't as harsh as some innocent person getting killed for the sake of your really important text message. Same goes for drink driving, it shouldn't be a 12 month ban it should be a lifetime ban and maybe 12 months in prison for the worst offenders.

And presumably this arsehole will get his job back the second he's out of stir? I honestly can't think of any other profession where you would be guaranteed to be able to return to your position after a spell in jail, except obviously professional criminals. Someone has to sort out this unaccountability thing with the lords, because as things stand it's a bad fucking joke

Anyone who can't use a mobile, eat a sandwich, drink a coffee and smoke a fag at the same time as driving shouldn't be on the road.

It takes about 10% of my mighty brain power to drive a 40 tonne truck, maybe 11 or 12% if it's a bit foggy :D

When it comes down to it driving is just the ability to move a vehicle without hitting anything. It's not rocket science

There might not be a causal link but it indicates a distinct disdain for the law doesn't it (not to mention a rather overblown sense of his own driving skills)? And he is a Lord after all, in the second chamber so should be a model citizen.

For sure, and he should be punished. My point is that nobody died because he was using the phone and usually (iirc) people doing this get points and a fine. I've never heard of anyone getting jail time for using a phone whilst driving.

So we either bang up everyone who uses a phone whilst driving (jails will be full) or not.

It's the inconsistency that I'm taking issue with.

Also interesting is the dead guys family outside court bemoaning the sentence as too light. Whilst their grief is understandable it's aimed at the wrong guy. This accident happened because the victim crashed his car while pissed. Not because Ahmed was on the phone.

He wasn't just talking on the phone. He was texting with it a number of times while driving a large car containing his wife and mother down the M1 motorway.

Texting is much worse than speaking on a mobile.

Ok, but that changes nothing in my argument above.

Are people normally sent to jail for texting while driving? I don't think so, so why this bloke?

In the other case of a driver who was texting and was involved in a fatal accident the person was also jailed. (the thread was in transport I think).

Yes if you are caught talking on a mobile but not involved in an accident I would expect a fine and points. Perhaps even a standard roadside fine (whatever they are called).

eta: I do think that people texting while driving should be locked up at least for a while. It is the height of stupidity!.

Yes, but that driver was texting at the time of the accident and the use of the phone was deemed to have caused the crash. That's not the case here.

So what's the difference? That's exactly the situation here.

The accident happened well after he used the phone.

Fair enough, then lock them all up, not just this bloke.

See what I mean?

EVERY DAY
I see people driving cars and lorries whilst talking or texting on a mobile phone.

Considering the hands-free technology available, there is no excuse for talking on the phone. Texting is another matter.

It really pisses me off, because the Police do not (or are not in a position to) enforce the law.

But if I walk down the road and take a photo of a policeman, they'll jump on me like a ton of bricks.

I see people talking on phones a lot also but I don't often recognise that they are texting. I think it would be quite hard to see that.

Anyhow I agree with you on handsfree, handsfree solutions are cheap enough that people should not be talking on handsets any more.

So what's the relevance of this:

I'm with you on the atitude thing, but that's not what he's been nicked for is it?

I was just correcting you :p

I thought that was exactly what he'd been nicked for. But that the accident where he hit the bloke was separate.

People hold the phone somewhere near the top of the steering wheel, so they can half see the road and half see what they are texting.

I see it a lot. :(
