Looking to get into Vinyl

i make music too!

i don't think it's elitist at all - i genuinely feel that the digi revolution has been detrimental to music in so many ways. i'm not gonna go into them all, as i've had this argument SO many times, but that is my belief and i'm sticking to it!

I don't know about the effect on the music itself, but digital has certainly been the death of cover art. It used to be that they'd put a lot of effort into them, now they are just slap-dash and used mainly for the icon on I-Tunes. If you are a record collector then decorating your house is easy. Just hang a few of your records on the walls.

I only tend to buy vinyl, but i download massive amounts. The two pleasures are completely different.

I have a lot of vinyl I love the whole DJ/Vinyl thing all my records are dance oriented and date back to the 80's. I try getting rid of them but each one seems to be as special as the other. I use to go to the pub with me mates then we'd all go back to someone's (usually mine) house and mix records.
I still have 3 decks :o

Yes, post-pub drunken mixing with mates is one of life's better pleasures i think

I'm still looking at the pile of vinyl on the floor by the system from the weekend wondering when I'm going to get time to put it all back in order. That's the only problem with impromptu late night parties.

How about when they record the sound of the needle being placed onto the record, onto the CD, at the beginning of the track? :D Sorry. I shall leave now.

record collecting can be very expensive.
i grew up with punk back in the late 70's early 80's. id trade records in to get the new releases, this was an ongoing cycle. then, when i could afford to buy records, i did my utmost to get all the records id ever owned. it hasnt been cheap.
i have around 1000 7"s, 90% of those are punk, and around 500 LPs, 80% being punk.
record collecting has got much bigger now than it was when i first started to "re-cliam" my records.
there are some good secondhand record shops out there that dotn have much of an idea with certain musical genres, but they are learnign fast!
so, good luck!

You think the LP12 a bit old fashioned, perhaps?

Don't be coy; what is the modern audiophile recommending? Our remit, remember, is to advise Nephew on how to get the best out of his record collection. If I'm out of date, I wouldn't want Nephew to be misled.

No, I use an LP12, and I'm very very happy with the sound. It isn't strictly neutral, but it has the ability to pretty much play anything without presenting it in a bad light.

If Nephew wants to go the way of Linn he can, but it would be advisable to do so via the second hand market, where an LP12 can be bought for a reasonable sum. He /she can then work their way up through the upgrade process, or just have the deck serviced and supplied with a new cartridge. A fully 'loaded' LP12 now retails for around £5,000, although Linn has recently introduced an entry level version for around £2,000.
