Looking for rap/hip-hop about self-love

S☼I Are they supposed to be as sick as you and me?

It's for a lesson plan I'm working on for my teacher training. I'm going to be talking about language features in poetry, and want to compare Walt Whitmann's "Song of Myself" to a more modern piece of writing; something that isn't traditionally seen as Literature-with-a-capital-L.

I don't know a lot about hip-hop or rap, so can someone suggest something? Preferably clean lyrics - no niggaz, hoes, blunts, bitches or muthafuckas, etc. And preferably with complex rhyming that changes. Something LIKE Kendrick Lamar's "i" perhaps - empowering and *not today Satan* as opposed to *I'm a king/badass or a diss track, etc.

Any ideas or suggestions will be most gratefully received.

the only things i can think of is Mos Def - Love < thats more about how the love of his parents multiplied by the love of rap pioneers feeds into his love of creating music, and the power of that cycle. it has amazing lyrics and its a great tune to boot.
worth checking some of the annotations to pick up on the references Yasiin Bey – Love Lyrics | Genius Lyrics

Not sure thats bang on the money with self-love but I dont think its far off.

Theres also KRS's Health, Wealth, Self

Time Crisis by Sammus is is about loving yourself and challenging social pressures

    not totally clean though

    [Chorus]
    Living after thirty
What’s the verdict from the jury?
I heard it from a birdy
That the thirty word is dirty
    But I’m living my life
And I wish you would live yours

    [Verse 1]
    I thought I had a classic man
I was thinking of a master plan
    It fell apart faster than
    The grass under acid rain
    Or the Flash running laps
After accidents up in the lab again
Now I read texts for grad schools
When the week sucks I add booze
And when I’m finna take a little study break
I’m havin’ great sex with rad dudes
    I ‘on like no assholes
    I on’ like lil rascals
They feel the dopamine and then I rope ‘em in
They call me Wonder Woman I rock a lasso
    Saturday I’m with bad chicks
If I had I say look like a pageant
    A couple pretty young things
    A couple video games
We have a gathering I call it Magic
So what if I don’t want to be mom?
Do that I mean gotta be alone?
    Fuck it I’ll wait
    What I look like humming
    Rock-a-bye-babe?
    Got the schedule tight
That could fuck up my day
    My vagina’s not a Timex
So why you all up in my privates?
Tell em’ it’s my body to decide if
I’mma be about it or I’m childless
Cuz regardless I’m an artist this
    Art is my carthasis spit
Bars jist like an arson it’s
A TARDIS to a far distance
    So call me a narcissist
You want a war I want armistice
You want to spar then you are dismissed
Art is my heart I will not risk this

    [Chorus]
    Living after thirty
What’s the verdict from the jury?
I heard it from a birdy
That the thirty word is dirty
    But I’m living my life
And I wish you would live yours

    [Verse 2]
I don’t really ride with Heidegger
But I think about time on the ride to work
    I am a mortal yeah I ain’t the Highlander
I’ll be a corpse one day under a pile o’ dirt
Yo, I don’t even got a gun license
But I might have a little Time Crisis this
Kinda bites like a fight of Mike Tyson’s
Yeah looking nice that is can one of my vices – yikes
It’s hard in a world full of old dudes
    Big balls like Goku's
    You a star laying vocals
    On your Pro Tools
Next up you are old news
So we roll through Whole Foods
    Getting store-bought produce
    And we starve on tofu
    To look more like Toadstool
Cause we told we ‘posed to
    While we going postal
They got us hating the day when we see signs
    Of our Nasiolabial cheek lines
Debating the rate that our ageing could take
Like a tape we persuaded to rewind
    Spending big bucks
For nip tucks to fix butts
    And snip guts
    I gives fucks
    Cuz this sucks
And if you don’t get what’s the big fuss
    I’ll discuss
I’m complaining we live in system
In which aging’s an act of resisting
I’ll admit I am not optimistic
You can change everything in an instant
No I got nothing against it
But you gotta follow your instinct
Like who are you really, convincing?
And of what are you are trying to convince them?

    [Chorus]
    Living after thirty
What’s the verdict from the jury
    Heard it from a birdy
That the thirty word is dirty
    But I’m living my life
And I wish you would live yours

Why hip hop? You'll have to filter the language, it's not a genre you're well versed in and the kids may well laugh at you (jokes). Seriously though, why not use a spoken word piece? I Am Not A Poet by Anaxagorou is a good contrast to Song of Myself because it's a song about the self in many ways; the self as connected with the world and the self in flux/development and interdependence with the external world. The long line and uses of repetition are similar but they approach the self from almost binary positisions (positively and negatively defined perspectives) and that old favourite, the JUXTAPOSITION of the personal and universal. Plus he's a good writer, quite trendy at the moment.
Spoken word would also give you the opportunity to teach how poetry has changed but remained constant across cultures, over time etc

I sort of wanted to be a big step removed from poetry/formal "literature". Besides, I'm delivering the lesson to my fellow PGCE students. I'll look at I Am Not A Poet, though, so thanks for that. I think I might have seen it before.

    Thanks for all the suggestions
In the end I've decided to compare Wordsworth's "Daffodils" to Eminem's "Lose yourself" and JFK's "We choose to go to the moon" speech.

Me, Myself and I is about being yourself and not what others expect. The video would work well in class too as it visualises the songs message.

Considered this - I could do a whole lesson on this

But it's 20-30 minutes lesson so I had to go for something more de la simple.
