Looking for a good ADSL WiFi router...

Kid_Eternity

Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?
Sick to death of the shitty one we were given free by our ISP and looking for a good solid wifi router for a ADSL connection. Don't really want to spend more than £70 (I know I'm pushing it with that low a number but fuck it!) and ideally would like to be able to buy in a shop rather than order online (and have the postie leave note saying its at a local depot etc).

Any recommendations?

Tricky to totally recommend one, because I have no idea about shop prices, but the Netgear DG834 (think that's still the model) is about £70 iirc.

This one? It doesn't look like a wifi router going by those details just a router... or is that the same thing?

DG834PN is Wifi (b/g/bonded g), don't know about the DG834.

New PNs are on ebay for 80 plus 10 P&P, think I got mine at a B/H weekend sale at PCW for a ton ealier this year, PCW so I could return it easily if I had problems.

Do you need ADSL 2+ ?? If not, you should be able to get something really cheap on ebay if you'll take 2nd hand from folks who've just upgraded to 2+.

What flavour of WiFi do you need ?

Need VOIP/SIP/physical VOIP phone port ??

How do you tell if you're on ADSL 2? We've got 8meg broadband (from the soon to be sold Bulldog) at the flat. Need need for anything like voip phone ports etc.

As long as it doesn't kick my pc off every hour or so (like the shitty one we have does) and can have up to at least five devices on it at any time (be they a laptop, my smartphone or DS or desktops) I'll be happy.

That'll be ADSL, not 2, which is the newer, faster technology with the potential to do funky things like bond two lines together... :D

The Netgear should be fine for what you want, I've setup a coupe of those with that sort of network and they seem to be a generally robust and easy to live with router.

Personally, I'd spend an extra £50 on the Draytek Vigor 2800VG, but then, I've already got the cable version anyway. ;)

Ah good news, cheers Iam! I'll leave this decision till i've talked over with my flat mate (who's paying for half of it) and also to see if anyone else has any suggestions/differing opinions.

Actually, I spose thinking about it, that could be 8meg on ADSL 2+ if you're on Bulldog in London and not close to the exchange... :o

Worth checking.

Most SOHO routers normally only have 4 ethernet ports, so that only 4 directly wired devices, plus any WiFi devices. Will that do ?

Iam, bully do have some london exchanges on 2+, but you have to explicitly upgrade to it via their DoubleSpeed upgrade and there's a hefty backlog at the moment.

If he's currently on 8Mb and further than 1.5km away from the exchange, then he's on ADSL2, any closer and he could be getting his 8Mb via standard ADSL (but unlikely as his line would need to be nigh on perfect to hit 8Mb)

I'm in SE1 and the bulldog guy said we are very close to a local exchange but yeah will check. Wont need to have more than four devices connected via wires at any point.

:D

It is. I like the Vigors (have a 2900VG), they're very robust, professional-type kit indeed. Use them at work, too for VPN connections over ADSL and the uptime is fantastic.

the brand new DG834G's are adsl2 compatible, I've just received one in it's restyled packaging. It could just be a firmware update, not sure though. I've bought about 18 (wireless and wired). They are reliable and easy to set up. Check with the supplier as to which model you would be getting.

I was flabbergasted to find that Dixons currently have the Netgear D834GT plus a free USB adaptor on offer in store for £79.99. (Have just checked their website & the same package is priced at £129.99. Installed mine today in 10 minutes.

Not any more.

I'm assuming KE no longer wants it as he has gone quiet.

Well my bully ADSL has been screwed most of the week, so I'm going to give my spare 2600We to a mate of mine who lives next door so I can piggyback on his ADSL via WiFi.

I've got a DG834, it's the dogs, really really easy to configure (literally few mouse clicks, automatically configures), not had any trouble with it in the year I've had it (running 2 PCs off it), also has a lurvely hard firewall so those port scans have fell to zero (almost), firmware updating has been fine too

go for the netgear dude!

No worries, didn't get a chance to chat with my flat mate...getting a new fucking router next week, sick of being cunted off this shitty one.

If you want to play online with your DS through it then I think the DS is 811b so make sure whatever you get is compatible.

I've got a Linksys WAG354G, it's ADSL2 and was £70 and came with a wifi card for a laptop. Simple setup and I can get online with the DS. I also bought a Linksys wifi card for my pc at the same time and have had no problems with that either.

No worries with the DS I got that stupid USB dongle thing now...

There are Wi-Fi routers that have a USB port as well as ethernet ports. SOME allow to use the USB port at the same time as ethernet, others don't. Don't buy a NetGear 834G - I had the 834GT and it was awful. Absolutely useless with laptops that had wi-fi but loved desktops with wi-fi! ]

I'm looking around for a new router myself as the one I have overheats.

www.adslguide.org.uk is a good place to ask around.

The usb thing wouldn't work, it comes with drivers and software that needs to run from a desktop/laptop...
