looking after a dog- the very basics

cheers for all the advice folks!

1 more question though- is there any way to stop her crying? i need to go out for a few hours later and even if i leave the room for 30seconds she starts whining and crying!

yeah build it up gradually. you could also consier crate training. when leaving give her a special toy - we use stuffed kongs - as this takes the focus off you leaving being a bad thing to yo leaving being "cool, nom time".

if she does cry be careful about when you go back to her. if you return when she is crying all you have done is taught her that crying means you come back... so whe will cry more. its a hard one to get right but your timing of returning is important. You need to make sure that you dont get her so stressed she becomes destructive but you need to be careful you dont reinforce the crying - never an easy one to get right sorry

i'm starting to thing that maybe it's not best for her if i keep her- she's incredibly sweet but goes batshit whenever i leave the house- i just left her for a couple of hours and had to shut her in my room to prevent her running out the front door and i could hear her crying all the way outside my appartment building :(

i did come home to possibly the most overexcited dog ever though :D

the thing is even if i can find somewhere doggyfriendly to live i can't guarantee that i'm not gonna be out the house for fairly long periods, and where she was staying before she had a big garden and 3 other dogs to play with (though she still tries to escape and cries whenever my friend goes away!

still, i'm glad i tried to see how we got along before jumping into anything rash, maybe we can still sort something out i dunno..

Won't she get used to you going out though? I bet the crying is heartbreaking but she's 'just' a dog iyswim, you're not going to turn her into a serial killer or anything.

yeah that's true, i know it'd be a fuck of a lot easier if she was trained too, just took her out for a walk and she jumped up at literally every passing person or vehicle, scratched my arms up to fuck after jumping into my arms shit scared of other dogs, and she's got the shits too! :D

and i woke up to a nice big sloppy surprise on the bathroom floor this morning lol! at least it wasn't in my bed anyway!

having the squits is quite normal btw in a situation like hers

her food has changed, her surroundings have changed tbh her whole life has changed. its takes a short while for things to settle down again
