If the cat wants to stay it should stay!!!
My cat never ran off or got adopted by anyone else, do you know why, because I kept her happy(before I got her from rescue home she lived in a house with kids and was terrified of them - so maybe kitteh ran away from a bad home) - although cats are great fun for little children, it's not necessarly true for the poor cat.
Even cats that are well fed and loved will disappear elsewhere if extra food and attention is on offer. My cats are pampered kittys but I had cuntish neighbours who would rather try to steal my cat than get their own.
You might have been joking but I think what you just said is really shitty.
