I agree with Garf - it looks like they're going through the motions just to make a second series. The first series was great - as was the book. This one is just a rushed journey that lacks heart and soul.
Exactly. Part of that's unavoidable though; first time round they genuinely had to struggle to get hold of the kit and suchlike, this time they just had to phone BMW up and ask for some bikes. No hassle. TBH, I preferred Top Gear's African trip the other day. :D

Still, Charley's Race to Dakar series (the one he recorded between Long Ways Round and Down) is pretty good - not least because he didn't have Ewan's celebrity status to fall back on when he was trying to source kit and funds.

If they did it with no support vehicles there would be no television programme. Whether that is good or bad I leave to you.

I liked the bit when they popped into the homestead set from the original Star Wars while they were in Tunisia and no-one recognised McGregor. Even when he posed next to his own character on the poster. Tee-hee!

I think part of the problem is that they DID have to rush the first part of the journey to make the Egypt-Sudan ferry (one per week!). Hopefully it will improve now that they are passed that part. If not, let me know and I won't bother watching what I'm recording.

I like that he's not averse to taking the piss out of his own egotistical behaviour

I did like that bit when he was interviewed for Top Gear for the first series. He took a photo of himself as Obi-Wan on the Long Way Round trip just in case there was trouble with border guards.

"What if he hadn't seen Star Wars?" quoth Clarkson. "'Here's me, in a monk's outfit, with a flourescent tube...'"

:D

erm you do realise that's neither healthy or good for either of you and will at some point in the future lead to massive resentment if not misery and divorce right...

just because that happens in a lot of cases don't mean it happens to everyone

I liked the bit in the first series when in some foreign country the police pulled up and he went into Obi Wan mode saying "these aren't the droids you're looking for, move along" :D

I would be amazed if BMW et al supplied the bikes and cars etc gratis, these guys have a BBC contract to provide a series of programs, there is some money in the kitty surely for things like kit.

Sadly I missed the top gear african trip, dissapointed not to have seen it.

So charley did the Paris Dakar ?

Makes me even more envious ..

I listen to Ewan bleating about preferring tarmac to ride on, not really being a dirt rider, what a wimp! if you want tarmac to ride on you should have gone to Birmingham not Africa! He could have done some dirt practice on the long way round ... or not ? /

If you're into Bike Trips there's one called Mondo Enduro which is ok viewing.

They do a similar route to what was done in Long Way Round

Hi Minnie_the_Minx, it does sound interesting but I guess that Mondo Enduro must be on one of the extra tv channels as I have not seen it on the standard BBC 1&2 Itv Ch4 & 5, unfortunatley at the moment we can only get the standard channels.

We only get the standard channels as well. I bought the DVD for my b-in-law a few years ago and two arrived and I couldn't be bothered to send the other one back so I claimed it :o

It was followed up by Terra Circa

Here's a review if you're interested
