Long Way Around

I suppose at least the BMWs have built in leg protectors, i..e they usually fall over only onto their cylinder heads and their bars dont get tangled with the ground.

Interesting though that they all broke their frames and had to be welded up again.

The weight does get me though. Imagine you were travelling along in Mongolia and you fell off. If you could not pick the bike up on your own you might be waiting days for someone to come along. That alone makes a BMW GS out of the question for me.

Were KTM the company that pulled out and left them in the lurch last minute?

They cant have been pleased that was all broadcast.

Ha!
Serves 'em right. The meanies.

I liked when Ewan got bitten in the head and swelled up like a monkeyman.

Anyone watching this again on BBC.

I enjoy it, I liked Long Way Down also but this was the first trip they made.

Ewan seems to be a bit of a wimp at times while Charlie just seems to get on with things.

On Sunday on the road of bones in Siberia the trucks were amazing at the river crossings.
Anyhow, I am enjoying it, anyone else?

I've got one of them trucks:) was driving it round this afternoon, loadsa fun but no rivers LOL

Its a legitimate part of the story too. They made a choice too, they believed the trip wasnt possible and didnt want their bike the subject of such public failiure.. so Im sure they were completely aware that their withdrawl of support would be broadcast and went for it as their favoured situation.
Who knows? maybe they wouldnt have made it on KTM's....

Just watched it! LOVED the river crossing!

The best bit ; when the massive truck teetered dangerously in the river and then they hit reverse. WOW! It was monstrously good!

Although you could do it on just about anything the GS was obviously a very bad choice for LWR and LWD. They took them for corporate sponsorship reasons which detracts from the whole enterprise.

Something much smaller like the KTM 690 Enduro would have been much better.

Anyone seen that series about Nick Sanders who went round the world in a record 19 days! He did it on an R1 kitted out with extra petrol tanks, but picked a route with almost all tarmac through pakistan, india, thailand, aus etc.

He rode for about 20 hours a day carrying only a credit card and a spare pair of pants, nutter!

I missed loads of it (the best bit going through Europe and most of Russia too!) but have watched 2 and they've been really good!

I wonder if it'll be repeated?

Having seen both 'Long Way Round' and 'Race To Dakar' I was wondering in which series does Charley Boorman utter the F word more often.

I clearly have nowt better to do but wonder about things like this, but I'm easily distracted.

For those Dakar rally fans on an, ahem, somewhat tighter budget, here's the low cost alternative:

not quite

they originally wanted KTMS but KTM wouldnt provide them. undoubtadly though they milked the BMW association a lot once they had provided the bikes (probably part of the deal tbf)

i would put money that he also carried or aquired en route:

a fuck load of speed
a fuck load of pain killers

20 hours a day on an R1 is not something I would even contemplate
