Lonely Planet

I've even noticed that the detailed directions - which I used to appreciate as well - are shrinking quite considerably. Which means the LP books have taken a major step towards Useless Suckdom.

I read 'Do travel writers go to hell' on my last trip, written by an LP writer. It's very entertaining if obviously a bit fictionalised. But he does mention that the LP policy on the budget/mid-range/top-range proportions used to be something like 60/30/10 and now it's 20/60/20 - so a pretty big shift.

The accommodation is something I relied upon from time to time, simply because in some places its not all in one place where you can casually wander between them to find somewhere nice or its late or your tired ,whatever. The footprint was a godsend in these moments because it was uncannily accurate every single time and there were lots listed.

I would have thought it's be more useful to turn up and not actually tell them you work for a guide book then they'd get a more accurate feel for the place (altho for sure, they'd have a much better holiday if they let it slip! In fact, I might give that a go myself!!!)

You need an LP card to prove you work for LP. My mate has one.
