But this is hideous

(it replaces this:

- which is already being demolished)
Although it will have a garden on the roof - open to the public for free.

Roo-bash

We'll have none of that.

I'm sure it's not that simple. I'm sure that they'll use the regeneration to move in a bunch of shitty chain shops like they did in the brunswick centre, and possibly to cut down on social housing, but these are London-wide trends and I find it hard to believe that no locals at all are looking forward to a new environment.

It's not that simple I was being facetious.

But have a search for threads and you'll find the opposing views. I'm not sure which urbanites live in the SE17 postcode apart from me, WoW and guinnessdrinker but last time it came up in a thread we were all in agreement that it was a BAD THING to be happening to the area.

Anyway, not really the thread and all that :)

I've always to preferred him to that tyrant Foster
Word. Foster just cranks out anonymous cut'n'paste offices these days (the fun ones - gherkin and city hall, were ken shuttleworth buildings really). Rogers still has some spark.

The damage to borough market is slight, from the plans I've seen. I imagine there will be disruption during construction, but the market will be fine.

Just be rechecking the plans. It does look like the construction period will be pretty disruptive, but the finished scheme leaves the majority of the market area alone.

Battersea power station won't happen while there's no tube or train station nearby.

There are two stations fairly near it & AFAIK Battersea Park Station wouldl get a major refurb.

It's hard for me not to be cynical, though, bearing in mind the history.

I read somewhere recently this is on hold due to lack of interest in advance rentals

No sign of that on the ground - PWC have vacated Southwark Towers, demolition crane is up, scaffolding is rising, shops in the corner of the station closed (for good)... can't see them turning back now.

actually, there are recent reports in the southwark news that suggests it might might not happen at all because of the world financial problems. basically, they can't get the credits necessary at the moment, and if they don't there will be delays. London transport would be the biggest tenant but they have a get out clause which they may use in the circumstances. hence a possible cancellation of the project. I hope so, anyway.

Agreed. There is absolutely nothing stopping people knocking buildings down, clearing the site and even pouring foundations, but bottling out of doing the actual construction. Until I see core shafts coming up out of the ground, nothing is certain.

Ah... hadn't really thought about it like that. Maybe my 'pro-shard' view was clouding my senses... wishful thinking and all that.

Yeah, it's nice to think all these things will go ahead and london will have loads of new towers. But if the money drops away, then anything that's not already under heavy construction will be dropped while they still can.

I can't believe how many of the office towers are being built on spec. It's like canary wharf all over again.

Just did a bit more reading... yep, they haven't got the finance sorted yet.

I hope they do pull it off. I'm not that fussed either way about most of the other towers, but I do like the shard, and a few things that are 'wrong' about London Bridge will get sorted out in the process.

I think that the Mayor of old London is taking too much on. All these massive schemes! he must be Knackerd the poor slimey man..

He's always talking about London being on the world stage, so maybe thats the next major project.. Kens world stage... Like Thorp park or Chesington world of adventures.. Built into the battersea power regeneration station. Excellent!!
Kens world. multi cultural GLC action.

personally, I believe that demolishing buildings before finance is sorted for construction or before planning permission is granted in the first place is to create facts on the grounds that people can't argue with.

Jesus wept. I'm an atheist, but I'd fly a passenger plane into that thing on grounds of taste alone. Garden or no garden...
