london walk 29th July Charlton..

dynamicbaddog

run for your life
Myself and Roadkill are organising this months London walk.
It's going to start off in Charlton going along a bit of the green chain route, then past the Thames Barrier, along the riverside and ending up for more drinks in Greenwich. As it will probally (hopefully) be a hot day it's not going to be a major hike - more like a leisurely stroll for a few hours.
Meeting point is the Bugle Horn pub in Charlton from 1pm
see you there:)

For the record, baddog and I tried out the Bugle Horn yesterday afternoon and it's actually quite nice. Two guest ales, fairly old-fashioned setting. I almost regret being rude about Charlton's pubs now. Shame about the karaoke though...

I'm up for this. Although I work near Charlton I never get to try the pubs there. Some info on how to get to Charlton would be useful.

It does sound very good.. alas, I'm working. :(

Might bump into you at some multi-rigger action later that night though. :D

(And my humble advice is to move this/or post again in the community forum where I think more people will see it - we all know what happened with Hollis' last walk that he hid in the London forum.:))

It pissed down all day, and he promoted on the basis of sewage. Also, he arranged to meet in a pub that didn't exist :( No wonder it was so popular

If people are so boring, they aint interested in the development of the London sewage system, and Bazalgette's masterpiece. then, frankly, tough shit!!

Rain or no rain.

End of.

I might be up for this... the finishing point is only a short bus ride from home :)
(and I've never explored the wilds of Charlton)

Trains from London Bridge - most services to Dartford and the Medway Towns via Greenwich stop at Charlton. There's a train every 20 minutes or so IIRC.

Bus routes 177, 180, 472, 161 and 486 all go near Charlton station. Routes 53, 54 and 380 (and one or two others I think) go through The Village.

The Bugle Horn is on The Village. If you're coming from the station, turn right and walk up Charlton Church Lane. The pub is pretty much opposite the church at the top. If you're coming on a bus through The Village (and the 53 comes from central London via the Elephant), then you'll see it, and you're spared the climb up the hill from the station. Easy as.

Much of Charlton is quite bland, but The Village has a nice, old-fashioned feel to it. I like it.

:)

That was a lovely walk, Despite only myself and the organisers turning up! We went through Maryon Wilson Park which some people may remember from Hollis' Woolwich to Falconwood walk, it has a menagerie with deer, sheep, peacocks and pot-beelied pigs. We joined the river at the Thames barrier and stayed with it till we finished at Greenwich.

Thanks to Dynamic and Roadkill for the guidance and interesting facts, good to see Tilly again too.
:)

And I really like this sculpture:
