London Triathlon

Yes I'm doing it. Olympic distance at 12.10hrs on Sunday.

I'm not going to break any records I just want to get around in one piece and not look like too much of a pillock in front of friends and family.

It's a shame to hear your not doing it Gaijingirl as you were one of the people who encouraged me to do it in the first place. I did Blenheim super sprint earlier in the year (first ever triathlon). Things didn't go exactly to plan.
Blenheim Triathlonl

Good luck Chris and everyone else.

Yeah, I'm pretty pissed off with myself, but trying not to be.. if you know what I mean. I just seem to have fallen to pieces a bit this year. But, I'm making changes in my life right now and hopefully I will be able to pull it all back and have another go! Best of luck! You will have a fantastic time!!

Unfortunately it seems I am prone to some serious gurning when I'm doing this stuff. The open mouth stare is one I actually find much more embarrassing than that. A few people have said that they are bringing cameras which made me think I'll have to be more in control of my facial muscles on the run in particular.

Did it! Swim was fucking shit, cycle was fucking superb, run was average (which is really good for me) - did it in about 1hr 35 mins, which is 25 mins below my target time.. quite pleased with myself :D

Well done Chris.. that's a good time. You've done really well. I'm off tomorrow to support Koobz in the Olympic. I will one day manage an Olympic, and I hope when I do, i'm as dedicated as you have been.

dedicated? I had a fag 5 mins before the start.. I did drugs in all 3 weekends leading up to.. and had 4 pints the night before.. dedicated is not the word. foolhardy perhaps ;) next one I want under 1hr 25 mins..

Right, my proper review:

In retrospect I loved it, and will definetly be doing another, possibly start competing in very, very amateur cycling as well. Not even that stiff today!

I can definetly massively improve my time with no extra training, but then it was my first, I didn't know what to expect. Big problem was that my boss, who kindly drove my bike to the Excel Centre, didn't turn up until 12:20, so I had to get all the registering, and bike racking, and wetsuit putting onning done in minutes.. the race started at 12:30 and there was a fair bit of admin to be done. So, I was panicked, hadn't had time to do much stretching, smoked a lot right before to calm my nerves, and didn't have any goggles.

The swim was horrible.. I knew the second I started even just swimming to the starting gate that my complete lack of swim training was utterly stupid. I'd convinced myself that rowing machines every night would sort me out fine, simply to avoid being topless in public swimming pools.. doh. The lack of goggles didn't help either, I couldn't use a proper stroke, and the open water buffeted you all over the place, and left you with a feeling of not getting anywhere. About 1/3 of the way through I noticed slight twinges in my left calf, these got worse until about 3/4 of the way through both legs locked up with cramp. The safety people in canoes asked if I was alright, and to be honest I probably wasn't, but people had sponsored me £800 odd, and I didn't want to let people down, or be hugely embarrassed. So I carried on using just my arms essentially in what wasn't so much a doggy paddle, but more of a dog that had been runover by a lorry paddle. Still, I got there in the end, not last, but not far off. I couldn't stand up due to locked legs, so was dragged out of water by marshals. Oddly my arms were fine, no stiffness today either, so maybe the rowing machines did help. But why did my legs, muscely as fuck, and heavily excercised, cramp up!?

Cracking start.

I kinda wobbled over to my bike, head spinning, feeling very sick from drinking what was essentially the Thames. Very shaky, moving onto auto-pilot a bit. Checked my txts, had some lucozade, and ran over the bike exit, forgetting to put on my hugely expensive, carbon soled racing shoes. I just had manky trainers with holes in. Started at same time as old man, who shot off in front of me. Feeling pretty miserable, and a bit of a failure. However the cramp soon wore off, I got into my stride, it felt very natural after all the cycle training I'd done. After 500m I was overtaking people, lots of people, and it felt absolutely fucking fantastic. Grinning from ear to ear I zoomed round, whipping past people in team colours, with several thousand pound bikes, hitting over 30mph on some straights (with the wind helping me), and it felt very natural. Took a certain amount of pride in glancing at the new muscles that had appeared on my legs in recent months doing their job and propelling me around the course. I came to the end, and suddenly realised I'd forgetten it was 2 laps. Had to stop and ask a marshal, not good for my time!

At this point I thought the reason I'd overtaken people was becuase I'd misjudged it, not paced myself, but continued to overtake people. A few people overtook me on this lap. Including one prick who overtook me on my left, when I was in the correct lane, and quite tight to the bollards. He told me to get out of the fucking way, I called him a prick, he zoomed off. So I decided to do my best to teach the arrogant, self-important wanker a lesson. Neeeeeeeowng! At the next straight I completely caned his poncy ass.. and must have finished 500m ahead of him. This gave me a real buzz, and I was surprised at my abilities on the bike. My time was far from anything special, but it wasn't bad, and as sad as it sounds I felt a real sense of achievement.

So, the run, the bit I'd been dreading. Racked the bike, put some socks on, checked my txts again. Then wondered over to the run exit. Decided to copy the stride of the people I was running with, planning to stop every now and then to get my breath back... but incredibly I didn't need to, I just kept on running, which I'd never done in my life.. didn't think I was able to. Even overtook some people.. however the whole thing was ruined by having to cross the finish line to the Rocky theme tune. Half of me loved it, and was grinning as if I'd just won the special olympics, tempted to run up the nearest stairs and jump with half the townsfolk joining me.. half of me felt like a complete twat, and slightly patronised.

Anyway, got my medal which features a broken bike, a hideously deformed woman, and half a torso floating in the Thames.. something to be proud of ;)

So, my official times (this includes time spent being dragged out of water, checking txts, and stopping to ask how many laps I was meant to be doing bear in mind!)

Swim 22:08 (abysmal)
Bike 41:59 (probably crap, but better than lots of people)
Run 25:31 (crap, but very good for me)

Total 1:40:03 - beforehand I was aiming for 2 hours or less, so pretty pleased.

Place 972 - so far down the podium I'm nearing the earth's crust!

So yeah, it was really good fun, and I felt quite proud of myself for the first time since I got loads of badges in Cubs.. I completed something pretty hard, and raised over £800 for charity.. it was a nice feeling.

Again, huge thanks to everyone that sponsored me - well above and beyond the call of duty, and I was quite touched, as wanky as that sounds.

Might do another one this summer, possibly some duathlons, but definetly something I'm going to stick at.. would really recommend it to people, and I suppose the best thing I could do to persuade people is to say that it's really not that bad. I almost a bit embarrassed for having made a big deal out of it, having completed it with energy to spare. Maybe I'll aim to do an Olympic at next years event.. might mean giving up the fags though :(

If I sorted out my transitions I could have taken 5 mins off my time, and if I'd trained for the swim I'd have taken another 5 mins off. So, with training, I want to complete my next Sprint in 1hr25mins.

"Kublai's just said to me..

"can I take a walkman for the run?""

Being some what of a traithlon widow (wtf was i thinking window) I think you will find wearing headphones at any stage on a BTA rules triathlon is disqualifiable (and doeshappen). I was marshalling a traithlon a couple of weeks ago and I was quite stunned at the number of cyclists who came into my aid station with headphones

I'm really impressed. I ran my first ever 5k race last month and aiming for a 10k in October now - it's great to have something to train for - the only way I keep the training up! Know what you mean about the finishing music - we had Chariots of Fire on a loop :D

Thanks Nadia. Actually, it was just a joke, we've both done quite a few triathlons before (including London), K's obsessed with cricket (which finished way before his start time and he wasn't seriously suggesting he listen to the cricket whilst running). He's out on his bike leg now.... been keeping my eyes open for Wire Thing, but since I don't actually know what he looks like, it could be tough!!

Ah.. good idea!!!

Edited to say.. just done that -thanks!... best be off, cos Kubs should be coming in from his cycle ride and I need to be there to wave pom poms and do handstands etc....

yeah, completely forgot to say good luck to Wire Thing and Kublai, how self-centred of me

nice one gents, that's a proper triathlon! :D

Actually I have been toying wiht the idea of doing one but I hate running with a passion and I am not too keen on swimming in a lake full of duck poo. Anyway last week I was at "The longest Day" in (well bits of it) in wolverhampton. This is an ultra distance (ie ironman, but basically ironman is a trade franchise) triathlon (2.4mile swim 112mile swim followed by a marathon). Anyway the night before (at registartion) this guy turns up he must be in his sixties he has no teeth and one of the better halfords mountain bikes. He hasn't bought a tent just a sleeping mat (organisers let him sleep in marquee apparently). He is asked to put his running gear in a bag ready for transition, the only pair of trainers he has are the ones he is wearing. The guy was very talkative but you goit the impression he didn't really know what he was letting himself in for. At the swim apparently three guys had to help him keep swimming at one point. I was at approx the midway point of the bike route, he comes in (he was in the last few to go through the sattion) convinced he has got lost. We convince him that he is where he should be (he has done the disatnce he has supposed to ). We offer him some sports drink but he doesn't think it will mix well with his Irn Bru (seriously). He finished the whole race in a very respectable 13 hours 15 minutes . It really went to show that you should never underestimate people (if the guy had a proper road bike he would have been giving much younger people a run for there money). Rumour had it he was some old school ultra marathon runner

Koobz did it!! In about 3hrs 10 mins (we think)... he's bloody shattered now and after a nightmare journey home, he's washing off the dock water in the bath. I feel shattered by proxy.... :o

gimme a shout if you want to come out with the Brixton lads one morning :)

cheers mate, appreciate it, but think I'm still probably a long way off being anything but a drag at this stage.. I'll keep training though.. and you were right all those months ago, Sydenham Hill is easy ;)

nice one Kublai  I aim to do Olympic next year.. very much doubt I'll do it such a good time though!

I managed to get around in an unspectacular 3hrs 16mins.

I wasn't particularly happy with my time as I wanted to get under 3hrs. My swim was steady but very slow 46 mins, last out of the water - gutted. I find it hard to explain why it was so slow as I've regularly been doing 35mins in the pool. I guess sighting etc. slowed me down a bit.

I then slipped and banged my head in transition and was really struggling on the bike as a result. I managed the run in 50 mins which I was actually pleasantly suprised with in the circumstances.

Basically I had the puff but my arms and legs just couldn't keep up with my lungs. I've never really done any serious exercise since my school days (I'm now 26) so my muscles are just not used these kinds of efforts. Over the winter I'm going to condition them to hack the pace.

I'm pleased though overall. In less than six months I've gone from not being able to swim 50m and getting out of breath getting up from the sofa to completing 1500m and an olympic distance triathlon.

Next year I'm going under 3hrs if it kills me. Well done Chris and Kublai.

Well done y'all !

We're planning to do the London triathlon next year, along with the Pleasant Prairie triathlon in Wisconsin. Not sure about anything else yet, but it should be a fun year.
