London Triathlon

Sent.

I went for a "run" during my lunch hour... but had to battle through 100s of tourists.. :( but such beautiful weather...

I was thinking that if anyone wanted to get a bit of practice in and have a laugh we could do an U75 team relay tri.

I'm already doing a sprint relay with work colleagues (it's slightly pointless doing a sprint relay cos the distances are so short.. but I'm easing them in with a view to doing a full on team relay with a sea swim, cos I really wanna do a sea swim!!)

Anyway, if anyone is interested.... just thought I'd throw the idea out there..

FUCK!!!! I did get accepted for the tri on Easter Monday...

shit... one week to train!!

And I seriously can barely manage 5k...

oh well....

thanks for the pm GG :)

one week huh? sounds fun ;) tried a run for the first time yesterday.. if you can barely manage 5k, I can barely manage 1km.. seriously, just not built for running.. can swim for hours, cycle for hours, but run for 5 mins and I'm dead.. ah well, got 4.5 months to train!

yeah, a relay sounds interesting, but not any time soon, need to get a lot fitter.. I'd be happy with swim.

started a blog: http://www.20six.co.uk/ChrisFilter

I'd be up for a relay - although like Chris, not any time soon...

The bike would be my preferred leg but we could sort out all that stuff nearer the time and I'll probably (hopefully) be a bit better at running by then...

PS - nice blog Chris

Right well if you guys really are up for a relay - take a look here...I'd do any discipline.. but neither of you have met me and you will have to accept that I really am that "slow, fat triathlete" on the front of the book (only slower and fatter) and so we won't be winning any medals - it would be best to consider it a training event!! Probably I'm best at swimming... but would be happy to challenge myself with either of the others..

Chris.. like your blog!

got a big fat pair of Nike running shoes..

jobs round Brockwell Park it is then!

Just ebcuase they are big and fat doesnt mena they'll be right for you.
Go to a proper running shop and get your gait analysed or your trainers could wind up danaging your knees even more

unfortunatly it's one thing at a time with my salary.. just spent £1300 odd on a bike and stuff.. will have to wait until I get paid next month to get another pair of trainers. probably need an expensive pair cos I'm slightly flat footed.. I'm licence to print money for sport shops

You dont have to spend hundreds.Esp if you can shell out over a grand on a bike, choosing not to buy decent shoes would be suicidal. Think of it this way.... Physio costs about £30-40 per session if you get injured wearing the wrong shoes( and you'll need at least 2 if not more)
Decent running shoes cost about £50-£80 depending on what fits you best and last for months

Well for me "slow, fat triathlete" use "skinny, slow, wimpy, triathlete". I have absolutely no track record in any sport whatsoever. I'm taking the training fairly seriously out of necessity as I feel that unless I do, I wont finish this bad boy in August. I'm certainly not going to set the world alight in any of the disciplines even after months of training. So don't worry about this time business. Were all doing it for fun anyway rather trying to break any records...right?

That's one of the downers of all this triathlon business is that it costs so much. I'm trying to spread the cost across the months. Luckily, I already have all the bike stuff as I quite like cycling. I haven't bought the wet suit yet.

Runners world
has reviews of all the shoes you could possibly want and a triathlon forum.
On their gear forum at the moment there is a London running shops thread which has recommendations.

If you live in Cardiff, London or edinburgh run and become is a decent shop. The only word of warning with them is that they will try to steer you towards asics, they seem to their their 'pet' brand. Asics arent necessarily the best shoe and they arent neccessarily right for you ( as I found to my cost and now wear brooks)
Dont buy from the net despite prices being right unless you already own a pair and are just buying a second of the same make and model etc

Chris..

Runner's Need.. Liverpool St will do a treadmill analysis and video your running to tell your where you're going right/wrong for free.. and tell you whether you're pro/supernate etc... I had this done at a tri training camp and although completely humiliating, it was very interesting indeed.

http://www.runnersneed.co.uk/

You can also go to Run and become which is down a little alley way nr Victoria. Instead of putting people on a runmill they have them run up and down the alleyway... so you'll know when you're getting near :D

Serpentine running club have TONS of advice for running/tri

Personally I have always used New Balance.. made in the UK so no sweatshop labour.. actually they're also vegan and damn good shoes at a decent price. I've been buying the same pair for running for a few years now and usually get them for between £50 and £70.

But it is SO worthwhile getting a good pair.. I'm a member of Serpentine and get emails every week on the mailing list from people asking for advice who have some kind of injury from not having the right shoes..

Also, I just found it really helped me to run "quicker" and much more comfortably..

£25.. unbelievable!!

Just got this:

For the 2005 race season TRI UK is able to offer triathletes wetsuit hire for just £25 FOR THE WHOLE SEASON!! We thought this might be something your club members would be interested in due to the increase in open water triathlons over the past few seasons. We are hoping that this low all-season hire fee will encourage more triathletes to enter open water events - usually the cost of hiring/buying a wetsuit can be a big deciding factor in entering such races.

Wetsuits can be hired easily over the phone - we will need your chest, height and weight measurements. Or club members can come down and be personally fitted into a hire suit and can even try it in our in-store Endless Pool before they decide which size to hire!

TRI UK will also be introducing a Club Loyalty Card for the 2005 season. This scheme will enable your club members to receive regular discounts on their TRI UK purchases. We will forward you further details of this scheme when it is launched.

We would most appreciate it if you could forward this information to your club members via your club newsleter or club notice board. If either yourself or your club members have any queries regarding any of the above please contact us via [email protected] or by calling 07000 874854 (01935 414142/01935 433533).

YAY!! I did it.... sprint tri this morning in Hampton... The Thames Turbo race series.. my swim and cycle went fantastically, but the run was basically shit... I really really need to work on it.. anyway, it's a great feeling and it's a fantastic course.. the swim is in the most gorgeous heated outdoor pool. The cycle is all flat and follows the Thames and the run is through a gorgeous natural park.... so I would heartily recommend any of the remaining 3 races in the series - especially as practice for London... lots of beginners at Thames Turbo. Dunno my results yet.. have to wait for them to be posted

Also, I'm thinking about entering some of these midweek tris if anyone is up for some practice...

traning has gone a bit tits up this weekend, resumes again tomorrow. front tyre has gone down on my bike.. happened very quickly, so might be valve instead of puncture, so fingers crossed it wasn't permanent damage. fuck

congrats on doing it though! well impressed :D i'm still a month away at least.

Forgot to ask..are any of you guys entered in the Blenheim Triathlon at all? I entered ages ago and thought that I could defer to next year if I wasn't ready. The guy who coaches me swimming thinks it would be a good idea for me to go for it so I'm gonna...

It's on May 22nd.

my boss is doing it, I'm not..

I've hit a bit of a plateau with training as I enter week four.. performance isn't rocketing up as fast.. and the weight loss has shuddered to a halt a good 1.5 stone above where I need to be. Last week I only hit the gym twice, so back at it hard this week.

Hiya.. No I haven't entered Blenheim because I'm going to a wedding that weekend (with a chill out yurt!! :D )... but I wish I was doing it... it really looks brilliant. I think you should definitely go for it... do you have any reason to think you wouldn't finish?

No reason to think that I wouldn't finish it other than when i entered in January I was a hopeless swimmer and wasn't sure how well I would be swimming by the end of May. Since I have been working with this coach guy I've improved no end and I still have nearly two months before the event.

I guess it's just first triathlon nerves etc. I'm going to do it for the experience as I think it will give me an advantage going into London as I won't be such a newbie once I have a sprint tri under my belt.

Yep - I'm going for my own Triathlon over the weekend.

Friday event is a gruelling - sit on the sofa.
Saturday - kip in the afternoon
Sunday - the tricky finale - read the paper

Good luck Chris Filter -

Will get round to sponsoring (sp?) at some point.

No, I'm not doing this either. My confidence is shot to pieces and my fitness is fucking dismal... :( I've lost it a bit over this year. I need to take the heat of a bit and get back into doing what I used to do for fun, without the pressure for a bit I think.

Kublai is doing it on Sunday and I will be there to support him.

Why?? You seemed to enjoy doing them so much?

(Best of Luck Mr Filter! PM'd you - we're going for a blow by blow dissection of the race next week, with beer of course ;) xxxx )

is it this weekend?

good luck!

and remember, you're not just representing yourselves, you're representing urban :D

Kublai's just said to me..

"can I take a walkman for the run?"

"Yes" I replied, "There's no rule against it"

"Good" he said, "I want to listen to the cricket"....

 :D
