London to Glasgow: Plane vs Train!

(In case I appear to be suggesting sarahluv is inventing prices, I can confirm that Scotrail does list £118.50 in their marketing pages, but are not offering that fare for tonight's service).

If you did it in the Veyron at 200mph (diplomatic plates) it would take a mere 2 hours, assuming flat out all the way, which obviously wouldn't happen. But we'll say the majority of actually getting anywhere is done at 200mph out on the motorway... you would have to stop every 12 minutes to refuel (so 5 times an hour) which would be a total of 20 fuelling stops. The Veyron has a 100l tank, so that would be a tidy £2,000 worth of fuel.
:D

sarahluv...Yes, I found that too after a bit of digging.

They don't seem to offer that fare though. Perhaps that page is out of date now?

I suppose the wider question that comes from all of this is

'is a world where it is neccesary/possible to go from London to Glasgow for a day for a single business meeting a sustainable world in a post peak oil future?'

I.e. Would a better future world would be one where such journies simply were not made, by whatever means?

Yes, that was my first thought.

i think that the page is up to date, but that there is some variation in pricing that they don't mention. i've travelled on teh sleeper many times in second class though and i've not had to share.

also if you were going up on a semi regular basis for business (or if anyone in your company was) you can get a transferable 10 journey pass for £1,025.

Sleeper flexipass
The 10 journey flexipass is ideal for the regular business traveller and offers a convenient and flexible value for money option that allows you to make 10 separate single journeys in the comfort of your own private First Class cabin at an attractive price of £1,025.

Complimentary refreshment vouchers or London Zone 1 & 2 underground tickets are not included and this is reflected in the price. Please note there are no further discounts for Railcard holders or children. The Sleeper flexipass is transferable and is valid for one year from the date of issue. No refunds available

When I used to use it alot I never had to share either. But for our test scenario, the possibility of sharing wouldn't have been allowed.

The 10 ticket pass is pretty good. A very civilised way to travel and £200 round trip, no hideous early starts, proper spare time. And if you were doing it both ways, you could go for a proper drink and a meal with your host, after the business day has ended (as opposed to Cobbles 'get pissed at lunchtime' option ;) ).

Wish they'd refurb the rolling stock though. It's a bit tired.

They just refurbed it all about 2 years ago I think. Including putting in disabled toilets and all that.

Maybe refurbed a little sooner (I last used it mid October 2007)

Still, good to know they've done it at last.
