London to Barnsley - how to get there cheap

I've just looked at National Rail Enquiries and it looks like it would cost over £100 :eek::eek:

Friend who is unemployed needs to (or rather, would like to) go to a funeral of a close friend in Barnsley on Tuesday, but would need to be there for 10.00am.

Obviously he can't afford the train at those ridiculous prices.

Anyone know what buses/coaches go there and how much they'd be and if he'd be able to get there on time.

He can't go up the night before as he knows nobody and can't afford B&B

Is there really no chance someone could put him up?

National Express seem to do the following option if he can stomach it

Depart London Victoria at 23.30 Monday night
Arrive Barnsley 04.45 Tuesday :eek

Depart Barnsley at 13.30 or 17.10 on Tuesday
Arrive London Victoria 18.45 or 22.20 on Tuesday

cost £28.20

yeah, I've just looked at National Express. Doesn't go on the day until 8.30am.

He's from Newcastle. It was a close friend of his mother's. I don't think he knows anyone in Leeds/Barnsley

OK, so say he does get the bus the night before and arrives in Barnsley near enough 5.00am, will there be anything open where he could plonk himself for a few hours?

Barnsley travelodge is £50 a night and appears to have space.

Curse his mothers friend for not specifying the date she will die at least a month in advance, avoiding peak trains.

Seriously, the present railway fares system gives us cheap fares for fun and frolics around the country, but whenever we *need* a train for a family emergency or whatever, it fucking stitches us up big time.

He's unemployed. If he could afford £50 a night, then he would be better off getting the train :D

You need someone with local knowledge obv. I think most McDo**lds open at 6. It's getting light around then now as well, it would just be that first hour or so.

yeah, that's why I posted on the other forum ;)

Looks like it'll have to be McShiteys. I think he hates them :D

Five hours on a coach. How on earth does it take that long, is the driver on some extra special go slow?

Could it not be quicker to get a coach to say, Sheffield, then a local bus or train from there to Barnsley???

Maybe, but would it be any cheaper?

and the fact is, the buses still don't leave early enough

yes you can do megabus London to Sheffield for under £5 a journey each way and they generally have good availability - see www.megabus.com - its then about 20-30 minutes by train Sheffield to Barnsley. I fear though that he would still need to get a bus the night before if he wanted to get there before about midday.

strange, Oswald didn't seem to think they went, but maybe he was looking at Barnsley rather than Sheffield.
