London smoker-friendly pubs thread

The new improved greyhound in streatham has a very nice beer garden (on grass) and the chavs have cleared off mostly as well - its been proper tarted up. It's a bit empty so far since reopening though.

They were also erecting a smokers gazebo awning heater thing also when I was there two weeks ago.

I'd just like to remind you all of what smokers have said to me over the years
"If you don't like smoking don't go to pubs"

So smokers

If you don't like not being able to smoke, don't go to pubs :p :D

c'mon

I'm not having a go at you personally but enough people have posted exactly what I said to give me a sense of real satisfaction to be able to be able to post what i did.

It's funny that people can dish it out but can't take it :D

FWIW I went out to a bar with some mates last night and while it was great to be able to sit somewhere and enjoy some live music and be able to breathe at the same time there were so many people smoking in the streets that the whole streets stank and we decided to walk back down the residential roads because the high street was too disgusting and was triggering my asthma.

I think there should be some places, whether it's pubs or just rooms or cubicles or something, I don't care which, where people can go and smoke so they don't have to smoke in the streets

this is really what the smoking ban is about isn't it.

giving those who cannot live and let live a sense that their wounded pride can again be satisfied...

Jack Beard's at the Plough (Coldharbour Lane SE5) has got a big sign outside telling everyone about their beer garden and how smokers are welcome.

I walked past my local, The Bugle Horn in Charlton, yesterday. It now appears to have a smoking shelter in part of the car park - unsurprisingly, given that the staff and regulars pretty much all smoke like chimneys. It's a great pub, too.

Other Charlton pubs:

The White Swan, Charlton village - bloody awful pub, but it does have a nice big beer garden.

The Rose of Denmark, on Woolwich Road - never been in but it's supposed to be okay-ish, and it does have a sheltered outside area. I wouldn't call it a beer garden, though: more a beer backyard.

sorry .. but really  smoke nazis

any ways the coach and hourse sotke newing ton has a4 picnic tables out front not great but they seem to have adopted a roatational type thing and there's now bucket loads of space inside... must admit i didnt' remember until i got tot he doo rhe ban was in place and then had to hang about outside like some kind of naughty school boy finsihing my fag...

the White hart in stokie, big nice garden but closes at 9 due to noise complaints from the luxery flats (prolly smoke nazis too) ...
and then it's out front where they have fuck all nothig zlich... so a day smoking pub or early evenign but not a ight time smoking pub....

finally the Rochester castle, smallish beer garden rammed tot he nines with every somker on gods earth apperently ... parasole look liek they have been seven rounds with mike tyson and the picnic tables look like they have been drinking since the previous day... a shoddy state of affairs...

I'm not rising to the bait and arguing with her, but this thread could have been a useful reference for London smokers. It's pretty difficult to use now that Louloubelle has stuck her oar in.

I think you should start another thread listing all the names of pubs already mentioned. THat way, at least smokers will be able to see on the very first post what's available to them and certain people can't interfere with that first post ;)

One new and one updated for the list
New one is the white horse on fleet road in south end green. 20 plus seats, well designed umbrellas and heaters all in pleasant courtyard.
Updated one is the hat and feathers goswell road/clerkenwell road. The umbrellas have gone.
But whats replaced them is more like the big top at Billy Smarts. Check it out they are fucking huge

Ended up in The Spurstowe on Greenwood Road in Hackney the other night. It's got a really nice good sized beer garden out the back.

Went past the hat and feathers last night they've now put the bar outside as well. What next pissoirs?

Went to the Faltering Fullback in Finsbury Park the other night.

They used to have a tiny beer garden out the back, but now have built two staircases in it going to different deck levels with picnic-type tables, nice lighting, plants and screening round it. The bit under the stairs has a couple of tables too and there's a small outside bar. It's been done really well, looks nice and has a good atmos.

Spitalfields -

Duke of Wellington: Toynbee Street. Sweet little walled garden out the back. Pretty sure closed at weekends.

The Water Poet: Folgate Street. Really nice garden with decking, huge umbrellas and a BBQ on Sunday. Annoyingly not open Saturdays.

The Owl and the Pussycat: Redchurch Street . Nice garden. Not open Saturdays, but legendry (if expensive) Sunday lunch.

Cargo: Rivington Street. Nice outside space with decking etc.

cargo has come in to it's own, it also has excellent live sound for bands inside, i much prefer to what it used to be like. expensive drinks though.

but all we've ever asked for is choice. I've ALWAYS been in favour of non-smoking areas in pubs.
the difference between smokers and non-smokers, it would seem therefore, is tolerance.
OK, my nominees from brentford; The globe: top polish food and terrif mine hosts
the crown and magpie: best beer choice in west London, full stop
the kings arms; food top vfm, lovely garden. service slowish tho
the griffin - one of the four pubs whioch adorn each corner of griffin park, and you'll see better entertainment in here than you ever will on the pitch sadly

White Lion Streatham High Road opp the police station. Nice back garden
very well covered with heaters its like another room.

Hang on, don't you all mean the pub garden / car park / pavement are all 'smoker friendly' not the pub itself cos, if that is the case, are there any gardens / car parks / pavements whick aren't 'smoker friendly' ?

Just not sure what this thread is achieving . . ?

in crystal palace...

the alma has a huge beer garden. however, it is mainly uncovered and also subject to noise complaints from people (who decided to buy a house next to a pub and then wonder why there is noise!). Anyway, they shut it early most nights.

the white hart has a beer garden too but the nice bit with the heaters is out of bounds to smokers cos it's deemed to be "enclosed."

The Railway Bell in Cawnpore Street is the best. It serves Young's for a start and they have also put up some kind of huge awning thing with built in heaters in the back garden. It's class.

The GHT on Gipsy Hill also has a huge beer garden but no cover or heaters unfortunately.

i guess it should be called the 'pubs with nice beer gardens thread', yes

I suppose the thread could have been called that, but I bet it wouldn't have garnered half the posts it has if it had been! :D

Besides, it's not only about nice beer gardens, but nice, heated beer gardens with ashtrays and other such civilised paraphernalia. :D
