London Senior Cup Semi-Final, Hanwell Town v Hamlet, Tuesday 15.04.25

Agreed. Amazed that the player didn’t flag it
I'm much more amazed their secretary didn't notice. Many players seem to have no awareness of which competitons they've played in, or whether they might be ineligible. I certainly wouldn't be relying on a player to flag it up if I was a club secretary.

Football Web Pages shows Joe Waight made 19 appearances for Haringey this season, the last of which was on 28th December. He appears to have made his debut for Hanwell in a league match on 18th January (their first game since New Year's Day) and scored in a 1-1 draw, and has been a regular starter ever since. Someone mentioned earlier that he didn't play in their quarter final against Tooting, but he was substituted after 37 minutes in the preceding game, so presumably he was out with a knock before returning for the following league game.

The manager and secretary must have known he'd been at Haringey and played in most of their games, and they ought to realise Haringey play in the same competition. It's not like he played one or two games on loan from a third club outside London, which might have been more easily overlooked. If I can discover all that information I've just listed when I'm just a spectator with no access to official competition records, why couldn't an appointed official of their club?

Everyone knows you can't play for two different clubs in the same knockout competition in the same season, so if they get off the hook because of this 48 hours of appeal clause you may as well just scrap the rule altogether and allow anyone to play.

You’ll be amazed how many players don’t even think about these things otherwise it wouldn’t happen so often even in the biggest cups of all. As we’ve discovered in the past the whole FA Full Time system is a mess. In an ideal world it would automatically flag up situations like this when the teams were entered on there but of course it doesn’t.

I was there when West Ham ballsed up by having Emmanuel Omoyinmi come on as a sub against Villa in a (i think) league cup quarter. Crazy it wasn't noticed he'd played in an earlier round while on loan but... it does happen.

WH won the original game but it was replayed and WH lost that one.

The FA has around 800,000 players registered across its Affiliated Football network, which includes over 119,000 teams playing in over 1,200 leagues and god knows how many cups. The majority of the administration work is done by volunteers and with the imperfect system that is FA Full Time it must be nigh well impossible to double check every cup tie and every player to ensure they’re eligible to play. I’m guessing that something or someone tipped you off PP that this player might not have been eligible. Personally I don’t check every opposition player after a game to see they’re eligible to play though there have been occasions when I’ve played against players I know played against me for other clubs.

Whilst I agree with Paula as systems currently stand, they are bad, that lets the F.A's off. A good centrally funded system rolled out over senior football is well overdue. The big issue is players playing when registered by clubs in slightly different names. A unique identifier number should sort that, unless a player is hiding their ID. Then all the clubs need to do is transfer ID number. Right now it's an open secret some players have multiple registrations. Produce either a birth certificate or passport and register that name. Any player moving on from their first registered club should come with a registration number. It won't stop players intentionally using various names but it should stop honest cock ups.

I’m trying to remember how things worked when I created my player portal profile on the FA website. What I do know is my photo I added is locked in there but his that’s used I’m not sure. I had a feeling that at one game last season in the Greater London Women’s League Division Two North the referee was checking off players against a piece of paper he was holding that appeared to have photos on it. That wouldn’t solve ineligibility issues but it might solve “ringer” issues. Older fans might recall a Dulwich supporters trip to Rimini to play in a tournament out there. At our first game we discovered that in order to play in an Italian FA sanctioned match we had to produce passports. Cue the vast majority of the squad dashing back to the hotel!!

This season two results from Clapton games I’ve played in have been entered incorrectly into the FA Full Time system, both after being correctly entered by our own representative. It took several days for these results to be corrected by the FA admin team. There was also another result incorrectly entered which meant we’d qualified from our cup group only for it to be reversed a few days later. It didn’t matter in the end as we did qualify but it was an interesting week.

Beyond what has been mentioned on here I’ve not seen anything else online in regards to this either from the clubs involved or the London FA. Doesn’t seem to be mentioned elsewhere that I can see. Seem to recall back in Billy Smith’s Tooting got to a cup final (London or Surrey?) after their semi final opponents were thrown out but can’t remember the exact timeline of that.

Total radio silence. I've tried bugging the club on Socials, but seemingly we're not willing to even comment.

Nope, just says that the FA decided not to expel them, Hanwell were distraught and it wasn't a deliberate ploy, and we'd not want to progress on a technicality
If the club didn’t want to progress on a technicality why appeal at all? Isn’t there a cost involved in that?

No cost in pointing out a breach of rules. Hanwell offered to replay at Dulwich but rejected by London FA.
We were outside the 48 hour-appeal period. However, it should be the competition organiser who is responsible for checking Teamsheets not the clubs.
The London FA should be embarrassed that they are unable to police their own rules and like the FA Cup there should be strict liability on clubs to ensure players are eligible. If not, they should be removed.
Anyway, the good news is that this season is now over.

Part of me wonders how the players might feel about this? A chance to salvage their personal season with a cup final? A final hurrah in Pink and Blue?

I’ve just seen tonight’s final has been postponed due to Brentford’s fixture congestion - apparently, and isn’t likely to be rescheduled until July / August!! According to Hanwells twitter

Brentford played a league match last night, they have a cup game on Thursday, then what appears to be the final league fixture on Monday. Then they're playing a testimonial match on 19th May. I'm not sure whether winning their cup tie might lead to any further fixtures. It's hard to see why it needs to be held over to the new season.

When we beat Uxbridge in the 1999 final it took place on 18th May, almost 3 weeks after the final league game. This also makes a farce of the longstanding rule that players are ineligible if they've appeared for another club in an earlier round, as any club may be unable to field a full team of eligible players depending upon their summer transfer activity. I assume that rule will be waived for a final at the start of the next season, so it may as well be scrapped altogether now.

Are they all out of contract after the league season ends?
