Nice photos of the croydon blocks!

I had a marvellous preambulation around London over the last two days.

Highlights:
Westminster Hall -amazingly huge and beautiful hammerbeam ceiling - really worth going to for scale of building
Guildhall Undercroft: there is only a handfull of pre-fire undercrofts in London. And this is rather beautiful.
St Augustine Tower in Hackney: Old Church tower - you can go up onto the roof. Lovely view and a bit of an Alice in Wonderland experience as the door to get out onto the roof is tiny.

Low lights:
St Mary Le Bow - Undercroft - how can they have so ruined this space...:(
Lambeth Palace Queue - they should have just done a pre-book.
Not being able to take photos at 19 Princelet Street

Heh, my mum and her fella started out on this, but I'm not sure it was quite what they expected :D I think they were expecting the seven hills were, y'know *hills*, not multi-storey car parks.

Bless 'em, they're not from London, I think they were expecting a country walk or something. They gave up after the 12 flights of stairs in the first car park and then getting lost in an underpass.

But they got a roast dinner in 'spoons, so all was not lost. :D

Yes, well, I wasn't quite sure what to expect. They didn't provide any information except for this:

Welcome to SuperCroydon
After WWII, Croydon transformed from a market town on London's outskirts into a 20C super suburb. This tour offers a walk around England's Alphaville via its 7 hills.

Kept thinking that I didn't remember any hills in central Croydon

I personally quite liked the conceit of the car parks. Certainly, once we'd climbed to the top of each one we got fantastic vistas across Croydon and were able to see the key buildings from all sorts of different angles.

I did think though, that they should have provided more details so that people could have decided if it was an appropriate walk for them or not. I noticed that there were some couple with prams who, not surprisingly, dropped out early on. The walk also turned out to be three and a half hours long so my mate and I were bloomin' starving by the end.

((your poor Mum and her fella))

the message you have entered is to short. Please lengthen your messeage to at least one characters

went to dulwich picture gallery and took advantage of the free entry...
it was ace, v funny exhibition called " what are you like"

I had a great time on Sunday.

Went to the Bishopsgate Institute cos a mate works there The guy doing the tour was great, and pretty funny.

Went to One Bishops Square. Didn't sound promising as it's an office building for a firm of lawyers. It was really good: huge Atriums filled with mechanical flowers which open and close at random, and coloured balls, a glass elavator (always a winner) and a lovely rooftop terrace on the 6th floor, covered with grass, lavender and other plants, a fantastic view of the City and East London too.

Afterwards came across some event in a building on Great Eastern Street, it was a showing of some glass designers and other artists work. They were giving out free cocktails! I don't think it was part of Open House, but a lucky find.

Then came across some filming of what looked like a Harry Potter film, hung around outside a pub trying to get in shot.

The only one we went to was the one we talked about - 13 (not 19) Princelet St. You were allowed to take photos there, and I got plent of my daughter weaving a loom; she wants a loom of her own now. Having looked at number 19, but decided the queues were too long, I've got a plan to take some of my EFL students there later in the year.

Next year we'll be more organised and see more than one small place!

I was quite lucky as I only waited about 15 minutes to get in to number 19, this was Sunday about 1pm. I really wanted to see it as it's rarely open and was not disappointed :) the house and synagogue are great and the building is very atmospheric - love the stained glass in the synagogue roof!
The immigrant exhibition is very moving and really makes you think.
As someone earlier said, shame they didn't allow photos.

Number 13 was interesting too - I loved the Delft tiles at the back of the fireplaces. The staircase was a bit wonky wasn't it? The steps were sloping to one side, presumably after years of use.

I had building saturation by the time i could get to number 13 - it was that or going to Tesco to buy decent food for my super.
