london folk fans - go to this gig! (Will Kaufman)

I'm trying to arrange a Tom Paley gig in Brixton sometime over the next few months. Watch this space. For those that don't now, Tom Paley used to be part of the trio the New Lost City Ramblers. He jammed and recorded with all the Seegers. He is the real deal. Surprisingly, he's still around and playing. Even more surprisingly, he's still really good even though he's in his 80s I think. Really fucking amazingly, he lives in London.

He also wears two tank tops when performing and appears to have a spare THIRD ONE next to him (just in case he gets cold or something?!) that out-folks everybody ever.

Well I went and it was ace, fascinating to hear the songs put in context and a really talented musician, I'll try and get along when he's at offline.

excellent. he's a mean singer & musician too, isn't he?

he's doing a new show of woody's anti-racist songs later on in the year - really looking forward to that...

That was really good... more lecturey than I thought it would be - but I liked that (made me want to go and do his course :o). And his banjo skills were pretty good.

Sound was a bit dodgy, but then I don't suppose it's set up for music that often.

Cheers for posting this up killer b :)

Me and Mr QofG's were there too - fantastic, very interesting and he was a very engaging speaker. I only have a very basic knowledge of depression era America as well so all the cultural history info was great too. And it made me want to learn the banjo!

Checked out his myspace page when we got home, worth it as it gives details of where he is performing and also samples from some of the songs he performed.

yes, i enjoyed the evening thoroughly, very engaging and knowledgable bloke and the music was top drawer. the vocals were a bit distorted to be kind but the performance and enthusiasm for it was compelling, i'd go again to watch him.

I don't find curtis eller all that convincing. he wusses out. all a bit smooth and produced.

Ralph Stanley is playing the barbican in May, on the other hand... now THERE's a banjo player...

Just discovered that Will Kaufman back at Offline to do his show of Guthries anti-Jim Crow songs on October 8th - nice one Ed!

Yep, he's back at the Dogstar on the 8th, with a different show, concentrating on Guthrie's politics. We've also got an amazing (ahem) 'new' band whose songs on MySpace are the best I've heard this year from an 'unknown' band.

Heard about a guy called John Smith, doing a similar thing to me, needless to say, he got there first, (bastard) :hmm: :D travelling across the Deep South with a mobile studio, complete with Red neck's shooting in the background. Going to check it out.
