Of course Muslims think that they are submitting to God, but that belief does not in itself make it so. In the same way that jewish people believing that they are God's chosen people does not in itself make it so and Christians believing that they are following Christ does not in itself make it so.

I can agree that for someone who doesn't follow these religions it can appear to be the case.

I know what is meant with Mohammedan, why the term was invented and by whom.
If you insist on using such outdated pejorative terminology that is up to you.

salaam.

You make it sound as if there was a single source.

If you want to believe an other version, that is up to you ...
I am explaining how the term was used, and what was meant, when I was growing up (which btw was not several hundred years ago).

... but considering wikipedia as a reliable "source" is not such a good idea.
Fullypumped quoted wikipedia near the beginning of this thread; I was merely quoting some additional thoughts.

I thought I made it sound as coming from a historian who studied while being at Middle eastern and European universities both. It is more specific by reading the earliest so called Orientalists that I became intrigued by the Western approach on Islam and its history.

I found my comment a bit harsh, hence edited the post while you were already replying. I'm not that fast in writing or re-reading :)

salaam.

I have never come accross anyone who believed that 'Mohammedans' worship their prophet. That is simply not what the word meant when we used it.

And please, note the past tense, I am talking about several decades ago.

I am talking about 19the, early twentieth centurey and earlier.
And you would be surprized. Some people today believe Muslims worship the "moon-god", others claim we worship "a black stone" (refers to the black stone in the Ka'aba) :)

salaam.

No doubt there are people who think all kinds of things.

Very true!

There's a load of nutjobs who really believe that the wretched bloody Koran really is the very word of God, as delivered unamended by Archie Gabe to Ol Mo the warlord! And people spend time debating what is or isn't an acceptable term for said nutjobs!

Amazing, isn't it. Especially the belief that it was delivered by Archie Gabe to Ol Mo the warlord. You must be crazy beyond rescue to believe that. Personally, I have no satisfying terms for said nutjobs. Yet.

salaam.
