London - best public transport: it's official!

 I know Victoria is going to be expanded (up to Bressenden Place I thin), but I didn't realise they were going to shut it. All of it?

Hopefully not all of it at once.. But I think there's going to be a huge amount of dirsruption.. It's bad enough when a bus gets caught in the traffic lights trying to turn into the station.

*goes off to anoy the network management team*

Despite cancellations and delays. The Underground and Overground are both very extensive and frequent and that's what really matters in the end. Everything is clearly posted too which makes finding your way around new parts much easier.

And you can f*** off with the deepest darkest South East London stuff because it is quite ignorant, not to say that it could risk being construed as racist too.
And everyone knows it's really called "swamp-land" anyway ... ;)

Public transport is a foreign word in America, so it's not surprising if Americans vote London (most popular foreign destination for Americans) as best transport, considering it's the only place they've ever been that has any.

That being said, the tube and bus network are very impressive and incredibly functional. The overland needs some serious work, but that's not really tfl's problem.

I think there needs to be some subsidies for the price, though. It costs 3 times as much as my monthly council tax bill to get a monthly tube pass to travel the 3 miles into work. Why don't they raise the prices on the weekend when you don't need to travel on the tube, rather than during the working week when you have to to attend your job? My annual increase doesn't keep up with tube fare rises.

I think the NY subway is rather good. Airconditioned, very fews steps to descend to get to platform level (although I imagine disable access is probably not great), local and express trains and a 24 hour service.

Bob Kiley sorted it out. Unfortunately I don't think he did as well with our tube.

Though I agree that outside NYC and other big cities public transport is not good.

Its pretty good. Its also very expensive. I cant see how it costs SO much to run?

In comparison to other western countries its probably tops the league for price. Only the bus would be reasonable value for money.

Tulse Hill.. but girlfriend has used West Dulwich before and says it's reliable, though the service isn't frequent enough.
Does anyone know why the trains on the West Dulwich-Victoria line only run every half hour? I have speculated that it's because Eurostar shares the route, and that maybe the frequency of the local trains would increase when the St Pancras International thing opens, but that's pure guesswork ...

Compared to provincial cities in the UK, London's public transport is very good, although there's plenty of room for improvement.

Spot on. As was vic in the OP ...

I rarely have problems in London, living near the Elephant and just off the day and night bus cornucopia that is the wonderful Walworth Road helps massively ...

It probably helps that I cycle more than I ride public transport, so I'm not as dependent on buses and tubes as other people ...

No idea, but it's a bit shit, innit. Glad I don't have to use it.
