Local elections: The Tories have done VERY well - but why?

The ever shrinking electorate is riddled with religious belief. Their austerity, mediocrity and the moribund social institutions they inhabit reflect that.

Carousel is wearing his underpants outside his trousers again.

Ive often wondered that. Hard to guess, and I would expect there to be a backlash by people being upset that they were forced to vote. More spoilt ballots, various split protest votes, some new parties formed to take advantage of the situation, and the likes of the BNP might do OK out of it too, if the words of some people at work who seem to support them but dont get round to voting or being registered are anything to go by.

I think everyone should vote but on every ballot paper there should be a "none of the above" box .

Ah yes. Go to the city, or another country, you're bound to fit in much better there with people you can really identify with who share your political views. Works out great every time. Don't people flee Ireland to get abortions? Those socialists have done a cracking job and no mistake.

thats right Carousel, my comment was !00% serious

dickhead

fuck me, the cunt things he's an expert on ireland now as well

I suspect results are known already but they can't publish yet

rte exit poll
A battle for the third seat is set between Sinn Féin's Mary Lou McDonald, Socialist Party candidate Joe Higgins and Eoin Ryan of Fianna Fáil. An RTÉ exit poll puts Joe Higgins and Eoin Ryan jointly on 11% and the Sinn Féin candidate on 15%.

There's a thread somewhere on Urban discussing the "none of the above" option. I agree - provided there's also one stating "no preference," in other words a neutral vote as well as an anti-vote.

I think you have to see elections for what they are. A collective expression of the public mood on a cirtain day expressed within tight boundaries, useually Lab, Con or Lib Dem in England.
Socialists can do well where they run a good election campaign, as can anyone else. It's just swings and roundabouts on the whole tho.

How do you know about MEP? Have they done count already - that's naughty!

You were absolutely right article - Joe Higgins is now a Militant MEP!

Higgins beats Ryan to third European seat in Dublin
http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/breaking/2009/0608/breaking2.htm

"A native of Co Kerry, Mr Higgins, aged 60, once studied for the priesthood but later became an atheist. His incisive contributions in the Dail made him a thorn in the side of former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern from 1997-2007. His election campaign was funded on a shoestring budget and his black and white posters claimed he was: ‘The Best Fighter Money Can’t Buy’."
