Livingstone Cries While Apologising For Slave Trade

Not to mention the gangmasters which have been doing this sort of thing for years :(

However, none of that is Ken's fault, surely?

It's not his 'fault' so to speak, neither was the slave trade...
But this kind of thing is happening under his watch and it would be refreshing if a politician used the anniversary of the abolition of slavery to tackle these modern problems, that either are naked slavery or slavery by some other name, instead of crying crocodile tears.

No, what you actually said was

"Odd, I never saw a IWCA London mayoral candidate. What did they poll?"

Throwing doubt as to whether they did, in fact, stand or not. You can't even read the term IWCA without frothing at the mouth anymore can you? Keep it up!

You and your silly wee word games. What is so difficult to understand, butchers? Why do you have to make an issue out of nothing?

I find it funny that you say "You can't even read the term IWCA without frothing at the mouth anymore".That is an entirely emotional response based upon your evident personal connection to the IWCA and the fact that you see any view contrary to yours as a full frontal attack on your beloved organisation. It's a shame that you aren't above the petty emotionalism that appears to accompany any support for the IWCA here. I always thought you were above that sort of thing. It seems that I was wrong.

So a big shiny slightly different building by Foster in the middle of London is bound to be popular as long as it's not too wacky. But that doesn't make it appropriate or particularly good.
You're entitled to your opinion, but a lot of people would agree. After all, there's loads of buildings going up all the time, but I've never known one be voted the best new building in London before it was even finished.

It's a marvellous structure. I love it.

I'm curious as to how he managed to get so emotional and remorseful whilst apologising for something he had no control over and nothing at all to do with.
I can get upset about things that I had no control over and nothing at all to do with too.

It's called empathy.

Doesn't that strike you as a touch irrational, though? It'd be a bit like voting a dish in a restaurent as being your favourite dish on the menu in that restaurant before you'd even tasted it.

That's hardly a valid (or even logical) comparison.

The tower was more or less complete and there'd been a lot of publicity material showing exactly what it was going to look like when it was fully finished.

he is cynical histrionic chameleon guttersnipe, who wouldn't know a genuine emotion if it hit him in the face. However, for reasons best known to themselves, despite his track record of collaboration with capitalists (disfigurement of the City a la Gherkin etc), the Met police (ID cards, surveillance cameras yes please!), anti-semitism (the camp guard remark) & so forth, most here will not hear a word said against him--hence the lack of reaction to your OP
I don't know whether to be extremely surprised that you're juvenile enough to (alongside the execrable and unrepresentative BDBJ) accuse Livingstone of anti-Semitism, or to put it down to the fact that you often manifest an inability to separate your personal prejudices from reality, a sad failing given how important some of your work is/has been.

Empathy is not apologetic; it is agahast, affronted, distrought and/or other. It certainly can't be 'apologetic' when as has already been stated, slavery continues to exist under the empathetic's nose.

The answer seems to be that people have very different ideas of what London is for, and our current mayor seems to think it's basically a free-for-all for global capital.

Whilst occasionally grandstanding to the media about how much you dislike global capitalists.....

It proved such a hit with Londoners that it was voted London's most popular new buiding - before it was finished!

In December 2005, the building was also voted the most admired new building in the world, in a survey of the world's largest firms of architects, as published in 2006 BD World Architecture 200. It constantly wins public architectural polls too.
I agree, the Gherkin is the most beautiful building in London, after St pauls of course.

In which case the fucker should wear sack cloth, dust himself regularly with ashes while being flagellated, for rejoining the Labour Party.

Bit of a silly topic for a thread if you ask me.

That's right, I said "hein". Is there a problem? :p

I think its an interesting topic for a thread. Just a shame that once again it is another thread ruined by one idiot.:(

I agree.

So why did you post on it when you knew you'd ruin it? :(

I apologised for the slaves on Urban last year and all I got was a rolleyes :(

Don't worry mate the "rolleyes" is the last refuge of the message board scoundrel. That emoticon is the sole preserve of thick twats who have nothing to say. Fact.

no harm in someone like Livingstone acknowledging the way the City and its finanacial institutions are built on rape/murder/imperialism - but an apology is just illogical. Fair play to him if he was to lead an attack on the different banks, shipping firms - or to big up a campaign on the trafficking and slavery (sex workers, overseas domestic servants) actually going on in London today. As ever though - unless I'm wrong and he is actually doing this - he seems to be going for the easy publicity instead.

So, what do the good people of urban75 think about Livingstone's performance?

Good electioneering move, probably secured him tens of thousands of votes. Much easier than solving problems too. At this rate we'll even see Brown smile come the next general election. Well not so much :D as :) .

Well who are you or even KL to make such an apology? No offence, I don't question your motives, just what did you or yours do to have to apologise for? It's well known slave dealing families like the Tate's and the Lyle's who should be doing it if anyone should. And secondly who is the apology aimed at?

No, it isn't. Really Nino you just get dafter, don't tell me you're trying to claim Scouse heritage now?:D

Yes it is and I should know because I spent quite a lot of my childhood there. I'm willing to bet that you've never once set foot in the city. Oh and just so that you know, the word "wee" is also used rather a lot in Northern Ireland. Are you going to tell me that isn't the case or are you going to come up with more snide remarks and ignorant comments, Mrs Swarthy?

I'm beginning to find your snide remarks about my background rather tedious. Anymore and I will report you.
