Liverpool 2007-08 thread

Heinze could free up Riise in midfield to send more shots out of the park, plus he can fill in centre back. I thought he was a bit old but he's only 29. Why not?
I'm not writing him off...it just seems that £27m is a helluva lot to pay for a guy who still hasn't scored 20 goals in a season.
Few strikers do nowadays. I'd rather we spent the money on Tevez myself but I do think Torres is class

why he won't go....

from a utd site...

First of all, he wants to move to a really big super club the status of Man United, if he does move. Secondly, he is actually very happy at United, terming it as ‘perfect’ here at OT. He’s already been made captain here and won the title. Something, that’s difficult to imagine at Anfield.

“I already play for one super-club and other ones, such as Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus, have been mentioned,”

Ouch! No mention of Liverpool. That’s got to hurt. So Rafa, stay away. Forget it. A transfer from OT to Liverpool is never going to happen. Unless you want Kieran Richardson;)

you can have that dipstick and his bint of a cousin as well:)

Personally I am gutted that we have had to sacrifice Garcia in this deal - the little gem was one of the very very few players we have with the ability to change the direction of a game. I know he did everyone's head in but he never hid, always wanted the ball, always contributed. Unless there are other reasons for the deal I think this is a real mistake.

Fan websites where people write utter toss really do wind me up. He might be passionate but what a cunt.

... always lost the ball
...always passed to the opposition
...occassionally scored a good goal that kept him longer at the club than he would have otherwise in my opinion. I won't miss him.

However it mas made th eneed for more wingers even more urgent.

Bullshit, he was a very good player who scored important goals for us. He gave us something diffeent around the box, I'm gutted that he's going. :(

Garcia was slightly better than Smicer and that's not such a great compliment. He averaged a goal every 4 games which is a good return for a midfielder and several of his goals were very important.

Ultimately, £4m for a 29 year old player signed for £6m three years ago with a year left on his contract is not bad business. He wants to go back to Spain. I don't think his move was dependent on the Torres deal but it may have helped sweeten Athletico Madrid.

I'll remember him fondly:

That goal against Chelsea
That goal against Juve
Two away at Dortmund
FA Cup semi goal against Chelsea

Luis Garcia
He drinks sangria
He came from Barca
To bring us glory
He's five foot seven
He's football heaven
Please don't take
Our Luis away

Cheers lil fella :)

And that one at anfield against the bitters, all those headers he got, :(

Looks like he wanted to go home though. Some quotes from the thumb-sucking one:

"It was a personal decision. Liverpool are one of the best clubs in the world. I spent three great years at Liverpool but it was time to consider my future. I could have stayed or I could return to Spain. I have made a decision which I believe is the right one. I simply couldn't reject the offer when given the opportunity to return to Atletico.

"Liverpool has been very important in my career and I will never forget my time there. Their fans are amazing, they supported me since my arrival, in good and bad times. I tried to do the best I could to repay their trust but nothing I can do can ever repay their unconditional support."

I'd guess the new owners feel they need more influence at the very top of the game and to do that they need more trophies.

Of course, the idea of the foreign investors remains to take control of the PL and through eliminating relegation, making it immensely profitable – in other words turning it into a clone of the NFL.

There really is no other reason for them to be involved in this country, just as there’s no financially responsible reason for a club with a ground that generates no more ticket income than Tottenham – and with inherited debt of £80 million wiped off – spending this absurd amount.

From the perspective of USA entrepreneurs, it makes no sense at all, unless you’re angling for huge long term profitability.

There never were debts of £80m, it was a combination of a gobshite who basically wanted all the other shareholders to dilute their holdings for his benefit trying to make the situation a lot worse that it was and a media ever willing to spread lies about Liverpool. In truth they had liabilities of £80m and a manageable, serviceable debt of about £25m, think moores stumped up the money for kuyt so it was probably nearer £35m when they took over.

Their new stadium looks fucking immense btw (well worth trying to hunt down some pictures imo though unfortunately the architects threatened legal action against sites hosting them so they've disappeared from places you'd expect to find them,) from the outside it looks the best in the world imo, at least better than that shite they were going to stick up (stock emirates/reebok/riverside bowl) think they've got permission for 61k but are confident they can get it upto 67k before they open it. Plus once they get the transport links sorted (they're on about reopening a nearby railway line) it's going up to at least 80k, possibly more, during the late nineties and the 'anfield plus' debacle they found they could fill 90k every league game and that was on the back of a barren period, now they're one of the most successful clubs so far this century who knows what they could get in, their season ticket waiting list has around 40k on from the off.

I think, like tottenham, there's a shitload of money to be made out of them, just needs a bit of a kick up the arse from the right people.

Oh and the premiership will never get near the sporting integrity of the nfl, not while it's in murdoch's hands.

The whole thread is quite funny, but here's where it turns.

A lot of media this morning are saying the price for Torres is actually £20m, which is a pretty good deal.

Here's a yourtube vid of Torres scoring some nice goals.

Got a nice turn of pace, be nice to see if he can do that in the bustle of the Prem.

And judging by the kit changes that spans 4 seasons! I could find a similar video for pretty much any striker in Europe. If you take away penalties, Torres has scored a total of 46 goals in 4 seasons.

Stats for the last 3 seasons (which also put to an end the idea Ronaldo wasn't any cop in La Lig) - league goals only so as to not skew the players who were in the CL.

Why are you still beating this drum, sick of how we kicked your arse in the CL?.

The kid has shown class since he was 17 fer chrissakes, give him a decent team, not having to carry the whole thing by himself, trophies to play for....

Well worth the 20 mil, one of the best young strikers in europe.

No, I'm playing devil's advocate having been one of about 3 people here to actually see him play over the last 4 years and not watch a few edited YouTube clips.

I've said on the La Liga thread that he's got massive potential and that free of Atleti's pressure and rubbish midfield he may turn out to be class. But £20m + is a lot of cash to gamble. Still now LFC can stop moaning about not having enough cash to compete.

And if you want to talk CL we don't need UEFA to bend rules just to get in it :p "kicked arse"....won on away goals. Still don't let reality get in the way of your delusions.

You've watched him play in a different league, with a team whose name is a byword for f**king up. When you think about it and his age and the prices of Henry and Bent £20m is a good price

Bending rules?. This from the team with Messi...
kicked arse - how many times was it cleared off the line in anfield?. Got any defenders for the coming season btw?

Pics or STFU, ;)

Imageshack them if anyone finds any please, looked yesterday found nothin.

Apparently taken on a mobile phone, so imagine it in higher res, they're apparently 'unveiling' it soon either way.

<removed because of 9/11, bet that's right pissed you off that has>

Maybe not to everyone's tastes but I think that's potentially class on a stick, depending on how they 'finish' it, if they use cheap materials for the outside it'll be shite but I'd be surprised if that happened. The pictures I saw of the valencia stadium probably rival it, though I *think* I heard they were toning that down a bit.

I suspect if their own FA weren't hugely corrupt and changed their own rules halfway through the season they wouldn't have had to rely on UEFA. You lost the league on head to head, doesn't mean you didn't lose does it, Liverpool battered you for at least 100 minutes, go on, admit it.

You've all thoroughly missed the point with Torres, Benitez is infinitely too clever to play with an henry/rvn, he's never going to put all the eggs in one basket, there's not supposed to be a focal point of the side, there never has been, not at Valencia or at Liverpool, in fact I'd have a little flutter on Torres not starting the first two or three league games if I were a betting man.

Though I suspect most are firmly aware of this and are setting stupidly high expectations so they can accuse him of being a flop when he doesn't score two hundred and nine in his first five starts.

Clearly its a video of his goals, what we don't see is all the times he's fluffed it. Remember Crouch at the start for us, just about fluffed everything including stuff 1ft from goal.

I think he could be great given the players he'll have around him who will supply the sort of balls he thrives on. His game at national level vastly improves when he has Alonso, Xavi, Iniesta etc around him.

But, if LFC really want to challenge for league honours they need a guy who can do it week-in, week-out and for me Torres has a tendnecy to disappear. Against Barca and Real he was a world beater, against Mallorca and Celta he looked ordinary.

Essentially get ready for a guy with all the talent in the world who will delight and frustrate in equal measure.

I've touched that sign..... and I used to have a goatee..... and I had bleached hair years ago..... and I've got a tattoo.

Not got as much money though  :D

"Can you score the goals Fernando?"
