Live classical music.

I'd go for the LVB Mass. Pyotrs 6th is a beautiful piece of music for sure and you're getting more for your money with the Shosh and Liadov, but are you ready for a night of nothing but Russian composers? Have you listened to the pieces yet? Always a good idea that...

Well, remember he said in the first post he hasn't seen much (any?) live classical music before. So I think as a good first gig, something more akin to a traditional all music gig would be best (rather than choral). So I vote for the Tchai.

Wouldn't mind going to that myself actually.

I can't be doing with the tortured Russian Soul/self indulgent 'Oh I'm a heema' whining...I like his 6th, but I wouldn't listen to it on a night out...

And I always find chorals, especially Mass, is a good 'get them crying at the power of the music' bet, always a good thing for encouraging return visits to classical concerts I've found (speaks as someone who has dragged more than 20 classical-naive mates to concerts and they've all been 'converted')

Nope. I'm a complete philistine when it comes to this type of music but the little bits I've heard I've liked. Was listening to a performance from teh Proms on iPlayer the other day which was really good. Could not tell you who it was mind.

Have a listen to the two you've narrowed it down to. Easy enough to find on bittorrent or Soulseek or similar file sharing thingamabobs...

Right got it down to these. What do you think?

The Missa Solemnis is an interesting work - especially if you are familiar with Beethoven's 9th Symphony - the Tchaikovsky is probably best considered to be the most accessible piece of the two.

:)

Symphony Hall? Who cares what it looks like, for acoustics it's up there with the best in the world...

It's true, they can adjust all sorts of things as well so the acoustics are just how the performer(s) want it to sound.

Superb venue.

If you want to windle yourself in slowly, it's probably worth looking at some local churches and Universites. Local orchestras will play at such venues and the price will be cheap. Might not be technically brilliant but unless you've got superb hearing you probably won't notice it that much.

I always find stuff that has alot of strings in it is more favourable for a newbie, especially if they are more into guitar based bands, when I first started going to classical stuff, I found stuff that revolved around a piano quite boring.
