i am quite impressed with that actually ;)

I find it distasteful to say the least. The addiction to this and the channel 4 "amazing people" serries is little more than rebranded victorian freakshows.

By all means watch it and enjoy it, in the unlikely event you give a shit: I will think less of you for it.

So's someone's body strewn over the motorway after an accident. It does not mean i want to watch it, or that i'm any less disgusted by the ghoulish nature of humanity and it's habit of slowing down to get a good look at other's suffering and death.

If you want more reasons than that then i'm tapped out, in the end i think it's wrong "just because".

whats distasteful about seeing how a human body works?
these people agreed to have their bodies used in this way so
i see no harm in it.
im genuinely confused as to why people find it so disgusting

so basically what you're saying is that nobody should have a curiosity about what internal organs look like, how they function and what can go wrong... ok... I take it you failed science then? ;)

You'll remain confused then, i can't express just why i find your behvaiour so unpleasant just that i do. But i find disecting a person just for the entertainment of people glued to thier TV is deeply unpleasant.

That last sentence is very childish so I take it Bob it is not your father posting.

These people donated their bodies so that we might learn from them and I genuinely feel I've learnt stuff not only from this but from his exhibition also.

Hah, i too have an ethical code and lax as it is for 99% of the time this is one of the areas i'm not exactly flexible on.

Teeps, this isn't education, this is entertainment. As for science, i passed.

erm... no I think you'll find its educational, I take it you've never watched it? it's not some gore fest with the dude just ripping organs out of bodies willy nilly, each step is explained on a scientific basis.

ethics??? ethics???

What the fuck has this got to do with your ethics?

How small minded of you that you dont want to learn from this.

I've said all i need to, and if you can't work out that ethics are involved with this then I'm deeply unimpressed with you.

I hope your doctor has the same ethics then....

tbh you just come accross as being disgusted with the human body, and not wanting to learn about it just makes you look stupid.

These people agreed, signed over, donated thier bodies to medical science.

I cant see what is unethical in performing with their blessing an autopsy on their bodies?

Yes it is televised, yes it does make fantastic TV, yes in some ways it is a freak show because we're not used to seeing such things.

I couldn't give a shit whether your impressed with me or not you're way off the mark on this one.

I've not watched all of these but I did watch the post mortem on the young woman with insulin dependent diabetes.

Learning more about how the body works and, in particular how we can poison ourselves with bad diet, lack of exercise etc, has actually helped me to be consciously more healthy.

This poor woman couldn't really help the fact that her body wasn't filtering out toxins properly and despite dialysis she died young, her body wrecked and I felt really sorry for her as a person.

I'm unsure abou the ethics of the programme, parly because of van Hagens' rather flamboyant and IMO unprofessional presentation style.

I think that the presentation of the facts might help people to live more healthily and if I was a lot younger the programme may have insprired me to pursure a career in medicine to try to help people like that woman live longer and healthier lives.

To me he just comes across as loving what he does and being really into the subject.

.

But do you think people would watch it and be educated if it was presented like an OU lecture? :)

I think it's healthy for people to be confronted with their own embodiment and mortality - as a buddhist I spent mucho time meditating on my own eventual demise, and I think it helped put a few other things in perspective. It's a profoundly uncomfortable experience however, which I think is why you get the emotive reactions.

I don't think that the program is exploitative at all - I can't see how it could be done mroe seriously or sensitively given the nature of the medium. Van Hagens is a bit of a nutter, but is pretty good to say he's presenting in his second language. A lot of what can seem almost like callousness is just the different perspective you get from chopping up dead people to find out what went wrong for a living - something to learn from rather than condemn I reckon.

I think the english doctor has the proper manner, warm, paternal, informative and enthusiastic about imparting information but with a professionalism that prevents him from being flambouyant and too enthusiastic about cutting people up.

i think theses programmes have been fascinating-whether it's healthy to watch autopsies whilst necking gin cos you're feeling really down following the death of your dad is open to debate, but i think they've been really interesting.Gunther von Hagens is a seriously odd individual, but i wouldn't say he was unprofessional. I didn't realise just how much they pull the bodies to pieces when they do an autopsy;don't know what i was expecting. Fair play to the audience for not throwing up though;it's one thing to watch it on TV,it's quite another to be able to smell it. i've heard from medical students that the smell of a gallbladder being cut open is one of the foulest things in the world.

Milena takes the prize for 'absolutely worst smell' according to doctor friends of mine. Fortunately it's not that common.

I agree about the personal angle, a friend of mine died of cancer the week before last and I found the cancer one pretty hard going.

I didn't watch the cancer one for pretty much that reason, although it would have been interesting. And also because it clashed with Shameless on E4. :o
