Live albums

Question from thick non-dance-music-person:

In what sense is Underworld's album 'live'?

'we are the ramones and this one's called raahckawaaaay byeeeeaaaaacccchhh...onetwothreefour!'

yes i know someone said it already probably four times and even posted the cover.

OK not all live albums are shit. I've just been reminded of Stop Making Sense, which is a great live performance on film, so it's not quite an album. Sounds great too.

Underworld's shows are as live as dance music gets. Karl Hyde has a number of self-controlled effectls lined up in banks of sequencers. Rick Smith is the daddy of manipulating pre programmed multi sequenced tracks to gve an as-live feel as possible. Their shows are just unbelievably good.

*getting excited about the Roundhouse gig!*

That Underworld DVD on 5.1 - I go for that. There's a bit where Karl Hyde is crouched on the edge of the stage and just looking over the crowd (which all seem off their tits). He loves it, so does everyone there. Amazing.

*goes to look for concert tickets*

I generally hate live albums, however the two exceptions i make are s&m by metallica and all that could have been by nine inch nails.

Both are different enough from the originals to make them worth while.

Live albums are shit - you hear the songs from the studio albums played not nearly as well and the sound is shitter.

Generally true, though the live versions of; Baba o Reilly, A Quick One (while he's away) Too Much Too Young, No Woman No Cry and American Trilogy are all better than the recorded versions

Aretha's Amazing Grace live gospel album recorded in 1972 is pretty damn good for a live album...

Oh, and Neil Young's achoustic(sp) 1971 bbc session is also very very good, but does that count? I don't think its got an official non bootleg/p2p release though...

Inspired by my own thread, have just bought a ticket to see Underworld at the Roundhouse on Wednesday next week.

Yay :)

My favourite is The Specials Live At The Moonlight Club.

Followed by The Who Live At Leeds.

Then probably the two Johnny Cash prison albums.

OK, if the thread's being bumped then I'm gonna quote myself. I don't listen to much poppy hardcore nowadays but this album is still a corker.

Also immense:
