We have a Lab. He gets fed once a day on 12 ounces of dry food and the only food treats he gets are raw carrots, which he loves.

Lab puppies require a lot of food. The need fed at least four times a day as much as they will eat in 5 minutes. Some vets recomend six feeding a day until they are 12 weeks old. They need it to fuel joint growth and can have joint and neurological problems later if not fed properly. They'll eat as much as two full-grown labs during their initial growth stages. Cut back to three times a day when it gets about 22 weeks and to twice when it's full grown.

Also, don't let it jump up on top of things (like into a car or stairs) until it is a year old to prevent hip dysplasia. They are very prone to that.

Take tennis balls away when half-grown. Labs are notorius for eating the damn things. Substitute a soccerball when it gets larger.

if you can you should feed twice a day in larger dogs as it can help prevent gastric torsion (bloat).

when a dog eats a lot in one sitting it can increase the risk of bloat if the dog is active for up to 2 hours after eating.


bloat is scary and can be fatal.

Ours is a working dog (up just after 6am out by 7:30am and not home till around 7pm). He works hard in the morning, occasionally races round later having a funny five minutes if he sees a co-worker of my husband's he particularly likes. Works hard coming home, gets fed at 8pm and just lolls about lazily till the following morning. He gets about two raw carrots a day too as treats. He adores women but that's more to do with the fact that my husband is a bit of a charmer. He's in love with hendo too but that's a frisbee thing.

I feed my terrier twice a day. I was fully intending to feed him three or four meals, but the guy I got him off was feeding them like that, so I thought I'd stick to it.

To be fair, he eats about half his breakfast and eats the rest in dribs and drabs throughout the day, and then wolfs his tea at 6. Seems okay for it though.
