No, not always. But then its a mouse not a man.

trabuquera said:If you can't have a cat, do you think a tame rat might scare them off?
Phototropic said:Fair play
But no you are right, just got to remember they are vermin.

kea said:first it's one mouse, next it's 25 tho. it'll breed.

butterfly child said:I know they're vermin, and all that, but once I've gotten over the shock of seeing them dart about, I can't help thinking they're rather cute.

Funky_monks said:When my Patterdale was a bit younger, I was working in a garden with a bit of a mouse problem and he used to keep digging them out of their burrows and trying to eat them. Maybe other terriers might do the same if you know anyone who has one.
I wonder at what age mice'll become to small for him and he'll move onto rats and rabbits?

hope it helps .Funky_monks said:KC standards for dogs are based on appearance as oppose to working ability. This has led to much breeding of 'working' type terriers (borders, lakelands, fox, Jack Russel...etc) for the show ring and working ability has, as a consequence, suffered.
At the moment, if you buy a Patterdale, you are as sure as you can be with any terrier that it will work. IIRC there is an unwritten agreement that if you buy a Patterdale and do not work it, you don't breed from it.

kea said:ah i see, cheers
yes, the 'pure-bred' standards do seem rather bad in some ways, from what i've heard they lead to greater incidence of whatever health problems which that breed is predisposed to ...
lyra_kitten said:We tried humane traps too - never caught a single mouse (used peanut butter - supposed to be their favourite).
