Little bastards getting bold as brass: A question about Mice

Fair play :(

But no you are right, just got to remember they are vermin.

if you are that concerned, keep the traps out only when you are awake, then if you get one in a nasty way, you can put it oput of it's misery. whop on the head or drown them.

i did this with rat traps, they tended to crush the skulls, took me less than 5 seconds to go view the trap, none of them were moving by the time i saw them.

We've got mice again.

I know they're vermin, and all that, but once I've gotten over the shock of seeing them dart about, I can't help thinking they're rather cute.

My husband was trying to chase them about, and all I could do was fall about laughing as one of them tried, and failed, to run up the wall at the back of the telly.

We've laid down poison but they're not eating it. We tried humane traps, they just ignored them. We can't get a sonic thing because of the guinea pigs... and we bought spring mouse traps but can't work out how to set them

So I'm totally at a loss what to do now. We could get a cat, but is it really fair to get one just to get rid of the mice? Because if we didn't have mice, I wouldn't be thinking of buying a cat.

Also, what if it's a crap mouser? Sods law that we'd end up with a cat who isn't interested in chasing mice

I found one scrabbling around in my bin a while back. My bin is about 50cm high, and i've no idea how the mouse got in there...

It took a breif unscheduled flight into next door's garden. If it wanted to try and return past the two cats (one of which is an evil killing machine) then it's welcome to try.

We tried those sonic plug-ins and at first i thought they were working, but they're not.

We tried humane traps too - never caught a single mouse (used peanut butter - supposed to be their favourite).

Ended up using old fashioned breaka-da-neck traps, and the problem is well and truly under control / almost gone. :( Sorry, they work so we use em.

We also keep 90% of our food in the fridge, and the rest in mouse-proof containers, as suggested earlier. Never thought about the toaster, though.

ps - I've retrieved too many mice in traps to remember, and have never seen one where it didn't look as if the death was instantaneous, and by the neck being broken. Have never seen one caught by a leg or tail or anything.

Don't underestimate how disease-carrying and unsanitary the little bastards are.

very good advice...

they have come into your cave, they have to take the consequences

i killed one with a corkscrew once

it was trapped in a humane trap ;)

When my Patterdale was a bit younger, I was working in a garden with a bit of a mouse problem and he used to keep digging them out of their burrows and trying to eat them. Maybe other terriers might do the same if you know anyone who has one.

I wonder at what age mice'll become to small for him and he'll move onto rats and rabbits?

most terriers should have the drive in them to hunt rats /mice they should go about this task with relish . Excellent breed of terrier you have my friend lets hope the kennel club dont ruin this breed like they have done to many other .

KC standards for dogs are based on appearance as oppose to working ability. This has led to much breeding of 'working' type terriers (borders, lakelands, fox, Jack Russel...etc) for the show ring and working ability has, as a consequence, suffered.

At the moment, if you buy a Patterdale, you are as sure as you can be with any terrier that it will work. IIRC there is an unwritten agreement that if you buy a Patterdale and do not work it, you don't breed from it.

ah i see, cheers :)
yes, the 'pure-bred' standards do seem rather bad in some ways, from what i've heard they lead to greater incidence of whatever health problems which that breed is predisposed to ...

Yes, working terriers are constantly being outcrossed for more vigour (greater disease resistance etc). You could see this when I went to buy my puppy. If you look at the pic below, you can see one of those Patterdale pups is a full Blwn border 'spin out'. This also creates confusion in working terriers hows, as the border coloured one would probably have to be shown as a Fell terrier due to her couloring, whilst her siblings could all be shown as Patterdales.

I don't know if this has been said but don't poison the fuckers cos they have a nasty habit of crawling away to die behind a skirting board and then stink your house out with the most horrible smell. You may also notice a load of flies, fresh looking, hanging around.

I had a terrible problem with them in this house and it was only solved by going round the outside of the property and sealing up any cracks etc. Mine were coming in via a tiny crack under a doorstep and since sealing it up they seem to have buggered off.

Kill all existing one's with traps using margerine as bait. Don't use the live traps in some vain attempt to be humane because they will be back and crawling on your kids while leaving a trail of piss (no bladder) and droppings. KILL THEM!!
