List the films you've seen at the cinema: 2007

Babel 4/5 - Very moving multi-thread film with a message about globalization (i think). Not great but very good.
Smoking Aces 3/5 - Some really rockin action scenes in this but the overly conveluted plot and simplistic characters really brings this film down.

I went to the cinema for the first time this year on Saturday. I took my son (who is three) to see Charlotte's Web. He fell asleep half hour before the end. Just as well as he'd have seen me having to manfully fight back tears at the sad but ultimately uplifting ending. I am a wuss...

I saw Notes on a Scandal with Sparklefish on Thurs. She had read the book earlier in the week and says it was fab.

The film was excellent, both women being totally absorbing.

I hope to be getting to Perfume this weekend if its on near me....

SF and I were lamenting that we dont get any 'clever' films our way. Four people walked out of Notes.... dunno why, they stayed for the sex, but left in the following couple of scenes. SF reckons thats why we dont get anything thats less main stream down here :(

oh sh:mad: t i missed babel now in the ritzy..wanted to go and see it tonight...

though it's not quite eternal sunshine, but still, certainly the best film i've seen at the cinema in a long while!

i still haven't managed to see any films this year:( almost saw hot fuzz, but it was sold out at the showing i wanted:(

that sucks marty :( and very unlike you! go see the science of sleep. :) hot fuzz looks crap :p (okay not necessarily *crap*, but can definitely be enjoyed on dvd i think).

science of sleep -a really wondrous, weird and amazing film

not fussed about hot fuzz personally. not my type of film (96% sure from just seing the trailer).

i wished i saw babel but now i will wait until it is on dvd.

It doesn't look shit, it looks like a funny movie made by a team with an excellent pedigree.
the trailer looked shit imo. (and choc's apparently! :))i think a lot of people think: spaced great, so this will be. apparently shaun of the dead wasn't so good either.

these are just opinions of course.

Curse of the Golden Flower by Yimou Zhang. Not as good as House of Flying Daggers, but still beautiful to look at and entertaining in a wildly melodramatic way.

I've only seen Last King of Scotland this year... probably go and see Science of Sleep and Hot Fuzz next week though :)

well that was absolutely fantastic. such a beautiful, funny, amazing film. i urge you all to see it!

i don't think btw that the film will hit the nerve with the mainstream though..?

however for me the scene with the little galloping horse :) galloping has hit the nerve for a classical cinematic moment. i looooovveeed it :) :)

Shaun of the Dead was fantastic. :p

UPDATE:

For Your Consideration 3/5 – Not anywhere near as good as this comedy troops earlier films but still gave me a couple of laughs.
Babel 4/5 – Very affecting film with great performances and great writing. The Japanese section let the film down in my opinion.
School For Scoundrels 3/5 – Funny as fuck in places and drab and predictable in others. Worth watching on video.
The Illusionist 2/5 – Pretty shit in my opinion (sorry Deli75). The Prestige was a better movie.
The Good German – 3/5 – Very pretty film, liked the idea and execution (making it look and feel like Casablanca). However, the story is not strong enough to carry the concept and so emotionally leaves you cold. Shame.
Half Nelson 3.5/5 – Great performance from Gosling and the script throws a few welcome curve balls but sadly runs out of steam towards the end.
A Prairie Home Companion 2/5 – Watchable but rather indulgent last film from a master. RIP Robert Altman.
Deliver Us From Evil 3/5 – Very good documentary focused on catholic priest and convicted paedophile father O’Grady. Not sure it warrants a theatrical release though.
Shut Up And Sing 3/5 - Hard to judge this one. I loved every minute of it and even ended up liking the music but its not a GREAT documentary. Its long and occasionally veers into the sycophantic.
Fast Food Nation 3/5 - Eye opening but emotionally arid film with some good performances.

Half Nelson. Low key indie film about a young history teacher in Brooklyn, NY who is a crack addict and the relationship that develops between him and one of his pupils when she catches him freebasing in the school toilet.

One of the better films about addiction I've seen in recent years, this is nicely understated and non-judgemental, lacking the hysteria and hyperbole of other films on the subject (hello Requiem for a Dream !). Slow but invovling and more character study than plot driven it won Ryan Gosling an Oscar nomination and his co-star Shareeka Epps gave what was the best performance by a child actress in quite some time. The soundtrack by Broken Social Scene was great too.
