If you do go Linux could us other Linux users possibly have a SubForum to allow us to see 'things' more focussed Linuxy wise? And therefore be able to learn or even possibly help when problems arise?
GNOME stuff should already be loaded, IIRC Firefox depends on GTK2 and a few other GNOME libs (which helps explain the god-awful file save dialogue )
In answer to Ed's q's that Fridge missed;
For managing FTP, the Konqueror file manager is the dogs bollocks. Just chuck ftp://[email protected] in the address bar and you're off. Also fun to try are the smb:// and fish:// protocols. If you run the KDE desktop, these protocols should be supported by all KDE software as they're provided by the bacground KIO layer, aka KIO slaves. The file manager is abstracted away from actually knowing how to manipulate files, see. It's all very clever and stupidly modular.
Personally, I'm gonna wait for the one with the 9" screen and chuck a trimmed down full-fat Kubuntu on it. Same form factor, no hobbled functionality due to a kiosk-eseque environment.
