Lily Allens 'The Fear'

it'll help get her name out / get a deal (and perhaps growing up in that background, with Enfield around etc would give her some confidence) but I do think after that she's on her own

True but you know that a major label album budget is roughly 30% recording and production costs and 70% marketing budget or something ridiculous like that. People will buy more or less anything if they're exposed to it enough.

Having said that I find her mildly amusing but she has been a bit lucky and also in the right place at the right time when major labels were going all out to sign solo artists rather than bands.

Of course, but given that it's not a meritocracy and is based pretty much on fluke, I wouldn't say that having Lily Allen was any worse than having <random person X who produces music just as good>.

it's not a personality tho, they are on chatshows for a couple of minutes

Well she was interviewed in a chatty way for about half an hour this morning, on a Lily Allen special (god I sound like a loser:D) and she came across as pretty cool and funny and down to earth.

Most celebrities don't manage to hold that for a few minutes in my experience.

I mean, I we never meant to like any celebrities if they come across well because they must be being media savvy?

Lilly Allen special ffs :D:D

Nah, but she blatantly isn't like that in real life. like if you were being interviewed on TV for half an hour and you didn't practice or anything you'd come across as a right dick,

well, you have only described her in terms of commerical appeal not her music.

My opinion is that her music is shit. Obviously that's not everyones opinion, or she wouldn't have sold any records. This is why I'm not discussing her in terms of her music. What makes you think I'm a student? That seems to be a bit of a deranged leap to make.

your obsession with 'process'

cos you wouldn't be relaxed or natural with the all the people in the studio sitting around looking at you and so on

it isn't really just her and the presenter sitting around on comfy chairs nattering, they are all at work pretending to be sitting about nattering and they are all acting

Well she's probably used to it by now. It still seemed like an interview, I'm sure there is an element of acting, as there is with most artists, but I still think it's quite hard to come across as likeable if you're not.

And it's not even as if everyone thinks she's liekable, some people think she is gobby and precocious. So it's not as if she's playing it safe to get people to like her.

she is tho. she's acting, she's a gobby down to earth lass, that's her character, she is probably really likeable

she's a nice lass who has done some ok songs, but she's only famous cos of her dad. i know fuckin loads of nice lasses and none of them are famous

you see, i think you are wrong there. Sure, there are loads of beautiful charismatic lasses out there and some do music. Lily is one of them, but (and im not even a massive fan of hers) she really DOES have talent. She wouldve been a star regardless (and she did without her dad) And in my opinion, deserves her success cos her songs are good.

We've gone back to the beginning now. Like Jefe said, having a famous dad isnt a guaranteed way to have a successful music career.

And yeah, I know loads of nice lasses too, what's that go to do with it?

You might think she's shit, that's fine, but I think saying her whole career is down to some third rate actor who most young girls have never even heard of is a bit much.

And she seems likeable, that's good enough to me, I like the fact she gobs off, and is quite down to earth.

well you have to ask: why do i like her first album?

i like it cos i reckon its musically good, and the words are good.

that is my reason for the whole thread. im surprised that the new choon isnt good, cos her other ones are.

Doesn't hurt though.

TBH it's just another of the pieces of random fluke that go into getting someone promoted - had a famous dad, happened to be singing when an A&R man walked past, company director's daughter had the same name, had the right haircut at just the right time, etc. I don't think it was an overriding one in this case, but I don't think it's irrelevant.

To be honest, I haven't heard her whole album. She doesn't interest me enough in that sense. But pop stuff never does, I love Girls Aloud but don't own any albums. But I do like her whole persona thing, I like the songs I've heard though, and just generally like her as a pop person.

Heh yeah but I've already said that! I'm not arguing that at all. Like you, I'm saying that it obviously helped, but that it wouldn't be enough to sustain her career entirely, I don't think.

We've gone round in circles now.

I bought her new album because I liked The Fear.

Clever lyrics, if you ask me.

The album is alright, probably not in my top 20, but there you go. Fame you have obtained from being related to someone famous usually doesn't last long, so we'll see what happens.
