The supporters' mentalities in France are like England in the 80s.
League football is not generally popular and clubs are supported by groups of 'ultras', for which read wannabe or genuine hard nuts in Chelsea and Millwall shirts.
I went to away games with Strasbourg and got pelted with all sorts throughout the game, while Strasbourg 'supporting' Germans Sieg Heiled at the back of our stand. We were in a cage - this was at Nancy and Sochaux.
The stadiums are primitive, too and the French police are utter cockwits who love nothing more than to have a go at fans, so English ones would be a dream come true to them.
The riot police in Lens were a big part of the problem imho.
