Since when are english loan words written as phonetic transcriptions?

I prefer houmous, to hummus. Because the hou leads the reader to a "whom" (if more clipped) rather than a "hum" (as in you hum it, I play it).

You don't have to to make it houmous. Arabs actually call houmous with tahini in 'houmous with tahini' which implies it's normally made without it
