Like the best humus ever!

softybabe

one merlot then two....
I've just made my first humus from scratch!! I used tinned chickpeas (ok, cheated with that one!), then made a fried scotch chillies, garlic, red onions and tomato paste thingy which i then added to the chickpeas, sesame oil and quick mix in the blender.

It was very lush indeed with falafel and salad in pitta bread

Wot's ur best forever? You may also cheat with your best ever shop bought ones if u must. :D

I am overwhelmed with awesome hummous, living in Dubai.

It's made by real Lebanese people and everything

Dunno - I see it spelt various different ways here too - I actually think "hummus" is more correct.

Not sure if you get the same variance when it is written in Arabic.....

They do a great one with Lamb mince and pine-nuts.

yum

Sounds good, and I always use tinned chickpeas now, never get it quite as good if I use the 'real' ones

Using tinned chickpeas for humus is not a cheat. And that's not according to me, it's according to Madhur Jaffrey (she does recommend you drain them and then steep them in freshly boiled water for 10 minutes to get rid of the tinny taste).

Oh! Thanks for the tip!!

I always thought it was houmous..but an Israeli gave me that information. He might have been misinformed.

I like humous but I don't really know how it should be eaten.

Apart from spreading it on tortilla bread and making a wrap with salad I don't know any other ways of eating it.

Ideas please. Nothing to fancy though.:)

I think as it's a transliteration from some squiggly language, you can spell it any way you damn well like :)

i make hummus really plain with garlic, lemon, chickpeas, olive oil and tahini- GOT to have tahini. and tons of salt usually. and i scoff it while it's still warm. yum

Use as a dip with crudities or warm bread. Have in warm pitta bread with falafel and salad.

Eh  i need suggestions too! there must be more ways u can use it

Don't you mean...It gives you raw farts AND it's lush.:)

Do you heat the humous up under the toaster or just spread it cold onto the toast?

One way I like houmus/hummus is a large dollop of it on a bowl of crisps - pref smokey bacon or paprika flavour.

Yeah, you gotta have tahini! I can't believe softybabe didn't use tahini.

I bought some tahini from H&B and put it in my homemade hummus and it tasted rank. I tried several times, and it didn't matter how much or how little I put in it was vile.

I'm fine with my homemade hummus without tahini now, I don't want to risk rankness again :(

I just blend chick peas, green olives and garlic in a bender for a houmous taste with less calories.

Less calories  hehehe! thought olives were high in 'good' calories :D

I haven't seen it written in Arabic, but I'm guessing hummus sounds about right.

It would be written: s m h

Because Arabic script is written right to left.

Also there are no vowels, they are indicated by... I forget what they are called, but the closest thing you can probably relate to is accents like in French.

If the accent is above the letter, that indicates an 'a' sound, if it's below, it indicates an 'i' or 'e' sound (both transliterations are fairly standard I think).

If there is a little sign that looks like a tiny 9 that indicates an 'u'.

So it would be more correct to spell it without the letter 'o' as that doesn't really represent anything and isn't really involved/necessary in the transliteration of the word hummus.

The double 'm' is another thing. There is also another little accent that represents when a consonant is doubled up, I vaguely recall it looks a bit like a tiny 'w'.

Because I haven't seen it written in Arabic, I don't know if it has one of these above the m. If it doesn't then it would more correctly be transliterated as humus, but given that the mm spelling is widespread, I'm guessing that it does have the little 'w' above the m.

If you wanted to get really technical it could also be transliterated in different ways either with an h or an H and an s or an S, depending on which letter of the alphabet it is in the correct Arabic spelling.

There are two letter 'h's. Ha and hamza, the former is more of a hard H and the latter is more soft and usually transliterated (in some systems at least) as h.

There are also two letter 's's. Saad and seen. Again one is hard S and one is soft s.

As I don't know which are used in the correct Arabic spelling, it's not possible for me to transliterate/indicate which would be more accurate transliteration.

Just looked it up in my Wortabet's Arabic dictionary.

The word chickpeas is spelt - read this backwards

S m H
(accent for e/i) (with the 'w' for double consonant)

Since Arabic language is based on root words, and hummus is made from chickpeas, I'd say it should be transliterated as:

HummuS

With H to indicate that it's Ha, the hard 'h' and S to indicate that it's Saad, the hard S.

mm to indicate the 'w' of the double consonant.

and u to indicate the little 9 signs that I'm guessing are in the word HummuS to differentiate from the chickpeas.

And definitely no letter o.

And that concludes todays Arabic lesson from Tahini Paste Street, brought to you by the letters H, m, S and the accents 9, and 'w'.

Probably houmous or hummus but definitely not humus - that's the organic matter in topsoil. Doesn't taste nearly as nice as hummus ;)

Noooooooooo! Not houmous! I've already definitively answered this one. I've looked it up in an Arabic dictionary and everything.

It's hummus.

:p

I can't believe that AnnO put all that work into translating it and you ignored her!

Now write Hummus 1,000 times!
