Lidl goes posh.

What independants?

The street full of them a couple of hundred yards from my local Lidl, which is at risk from its predatory tactics.

That Lidl only opened a year ago. had I known and thought then what I do now, I'd have made a bloody nuisance of myself to the planning committee and tried to stop them building it in the first place.

Get yerself down the market ;)

You need to be very well-heeled to use my local market & have a taste for utter luxury. Also, a big freezer & plenty of storage sppace, they only operate once a month. The nearest real market to me is a 200+ mile round trip.

200 miles!! Where the fuck do you live?

From what I've heard from the various Lidl staff I've come across is that they can be a considerably better employer than the other supermarket chains & they pay a bit better as well.

Lidl and Aldi pay far better wages than other supermarkets do. (They pay far higher than the average for many jobs in Cornwall).

We don't all live in London :p

I never knew markets were a london phenonema :p

Market shops are nearly always cheaper for fruit and veg than any supermarket anyhoo.

REALLY?? Shopping at supermarkets is worse than shopping in small independent shops? Gee, thanks for telling me, I'll be sure to source my opera glasses and humidors locally in the future.

What?

Make sense, at least...

By road that is a similar situation to me, (plus 200 nautical miles on the road trip)
The Lizard to St Renan in Brittany and back.

I take it you have never been to Eastville market.

I don't really understand the concept of 'independent' shops either. Can anyone explain to me what is meant by that? I have no intention of doing my monthly shop at the corner shop which is owned by the most miserable and rude people in the world.

Even when we had local shops, using them could be a right nightmare as well. The Butcher was OK tho, the general shop was tiny & you would have a pretty boring life on their idea of stock. Later-on it was bought-over by a virual illiterate/innumerate guy whose enthusiasm about being a shopkeeper didn't quite overcome the the constant shite over prices/delivery & you really didn't want to go through the hassle of giving him a cheque. My bank probably celebrated when he gave-up! We had a baker till quite recently but he mainly supplied other shops. Counter sales were only between 3 & 8am or when he could be bothered. The nearest placees with a decent range of shops involved a drive into a busy city with fuck-all parking or a 30 mile round trip to a country town. However, if you used the bus, the drivers could refuse to take anyone on who had more than one average size shopping bag. In principle & where possible, in practice I do prefer to use local shops & for some, I will go out of my way to use them but for the rest, life & spare time is too bloody short! :(

Lidl are a bunch of cunts that you should boycott IMO.

I was reading that in one country they make female workers wear a headband when they are on the blob because only then are they allowed to have toilet breaks.

LOL

sorry i shouldn't laugh but I really don't believe that story.

Lidl are a german company and so I would imagine would get their asses hauled over hot coals for such a blatantly sexist degrading practice.

Not that i'm sort of PR guy for cheap ass German supermarkets.

I heard that in ASDA every morning they make the staff line up at the check outs and then they play "Lets Get Ready to RUmble!", now i think thats a lot more degrading than having the world know your having your princess mensies.

That was why i said independent shops when you can.

I'm lucky. I live near a street of good, cheap independents which I'm keen to preserve, and seeing Lidl deliberately trying to put them out of business (they were running a half-price offer on meat too recently) mades me angry. Not everyone is that fortunate.

What I object to, though, is the idea (and I wondered if Enid Laundromat was suggesting this) that anyone who tries not to use supermarkets and advises others to do the same if they can a) is wealthy, and b) has a lot of free time. Neither of those is anything like true for me.

Hmmm, the little bonding games done by the different teams when they go on shift are one of the minor amusements of traipsing round there at the dead of night. Very cultish!

oh great the moralising supporters of the petite bourgeois have came to remind us not to give our money to supermarkets.

fuck me what planet do half you fucks live on that you think people have time to be ballsing about going to overpriced independent shops.

Independent shops near me consist of:

Corner shop (as mentioned in previous post) - OK for beer, and the occasional loaf of bread. Very limited range of goods, and expensive.

One butchers - Halal.

One veg shop - recently fined by Environmental Health for having mice droppings in the storeroom.

That's it. There's not even a bakery.

Do what the fuck you like. If you couldn't give a monkeys about workers welfare, shop at the chains. If you do, shop at wholefood places and suchlike. If you live out in the sticks and only have one shop nearby then either shut up or move to somewhere that isn't in the middle of fucking nowhere. Jesus, you do have a choice as to where you live you know, you haven't been allocated to an area by the bureau.

Yes dear.

Why not read the thread before you go making bollocks assumptions about people based on their shopping habits?

I get all my tinned/frozen/packet stuff once a month from the big Tesco near me.

I usually get fresh fruit and veg as I need it, although Tesco & M&S are the only places nearby.

Very occasionally I wander to the market or to the Sweetmart (a big Asian supermarket) and buy a big load all at once, for cooking meals and then putting them in the freezer. These are further away though so it's more of an effort.

Then yes, unquestionably that is worth preserving but for many of us, those days are long-gone & the demands of working family life make using those that are left difficult as well. Most places in my area have taken the up-market route to survive but recently, the economic climate has seen many of them go to the wall too. :(

But it is a vicious circle, which I'm often guilty of myself. The less you shop in your local independent stores the more expensive and further away they come.

I'm not innocent by a long way.

I know that, but what choice do you have if you work 9 - 5 and the independent shops are shut outside of those hours? I don't have a car either so it's not as if I can go there at weekends and stock up.
