Lidl Buying tips

Seconded on:

Frozen Pizzas - excellent quality and better than any other supermarket's frozen pizzas - add a bit extra cheese if you want to, but the plain mozzerella one are lush on their own.

Also:

Beer, Champagne, German Schwazwaldschinken (long word for cured smoked ham), Leerdammer cheese, and much, much, more!

Checked out the leaflet last night - a party pack of a 5 litre can of Geman style beer ( polish brewed I think ) + little tap on the bottom for the princely sum of £8.

thats 5 litres. 5.

Hmmmmmmmm

If that's the Grafen Walder Pils, last time Lidl had that on offer it was cheaper to buy it in their normal cans.

definitely the olive oil and comte cheese. it's weird to see all these things in a cut price supermaket. definitely not the old kwiksave type:D

Would be nice to get the chance to compare!

The recent application to open an Aldi here got deferred till next year sometime (effectively killing it) whilst a later application to build yet another Tesco, virtually next door to its site plus three others nearby sailed through, virtually unopposed - at the same meeting!

Its because Aldi/Lidl etc aren't technically classed as supermarkets but as discount/wholesalers cos of their distribution/buying network (I think)

Do nice semi posh cheese slices

they do a really nice ham with 'Premium' on the front...

and a fantastic raspberry jam - white and red label, white top.

mmm-mmm

Don't forget, Thursday 1st of June: Nautical Sale!, be sure to get your diver's slate.

hehe... I love lidl! I just think they're a little off the wall with their specials. When they did the horse kit sale it went down like a tonne bricks in my neck of the woods. The locals don't even know what a horse is let alone why you'd want a blanket for one.

i dunno... these might be popular round my way:

Whereas in my neck of the woods they were queued out the door for the horsey and bike gear, and the camping and diving weeks are hottly anticipated too.:D

The meatballs [frikadellan?] are very good on home made pizzas, and their cheese, yoghurts and biscuits are fab.

IIRC, the last time they had a knife like this, Lidl ended-up pulling it from many stores after complaints from various councils/groups.

I've never seen the meatballs in Lidl -- where do you find them?

I like the smoked salmon fillets myself, and the frozen Indian mini samosas and bhajis are pretty good as well.

I've never been to Lidl as we didn't have one back home nor where I used to live in London, but now I have 2 relatively close to me, so I think I'll start going there- and take all these suggestions with me!

My boyfriend is well ahead of the game and goes to Lidl quite a lot, he says that the fruit juice is great, as is some thing called a "cheese steak" ? What are these things?

Top Tip: Don't but the self-inflating camping mattress... it's shit. The buckles don't do up and it doesn't inflate. And the bits that hold the top side to the bottom are broken too.

Also don't buy the cook's firethrower (whateveryacallem) as they can't be filled.

lidls are great at refunds for shonky goods though. I feel much richer now! :D

Yes I know it's only an illusion...

Chilled cabinet, with he sausage
They come in two varieties, meatballs and patties

Top Tip

The jumbo bags of Tortilla chips go very well with their jars os Salao & a few chilled Own brand German beers, but the lid of the Salsa *doesnt* come off very easily at all..

stab a knife into the metal lid to release the pressure and it comes off without any effort...

Olive oil - we buy it by the case.

Butter (likewise), although it's bloody salty butter.

Montepulciano d'Abbruzzo - about as good a bottle of wine as you'll get anywhere for £2.90.

Some of the intriguing one-off items. NOT clothing, though - just the pictures on the fronts of the packs are scary enough.

they were selling packs of smoked steaky bacon for 39p there yesterday! and it's nice!

there other bacon is good, and the coffee beans are also of fine quality...

they also do a freshly squeezed apple juice which is lush. :)

Was there yesturday and they were giving away free packs of Taxi biscuit bars at the checkout:cool: :) (this was the Surrey Quays store)

might have to get a wet suit taking up kayaking and going to be spending a lot of time in the water :( rather than on it.
the hiking trousers I brought there lasted a year of an outward bound course not bad for a fiver each :D

Ahhh... Once again, an opportunity to list my Lidl greats *rubs hands with glee*

The plain live yoghurts, plus their vanilla flavoured cousins, are absolutely lush. Have em for breakfast every morning with a banana... yum...

The slightly salted butter at 55p is clean tasting and not very salty - lush..

The Dulano ham, a bit salty, but no water - half the price and less adulterated than most other supermarket ham.

The smoked salmon steaks as mentioned already are well tasty on their own, and excellent heated up in pasta and fishy noodle dishes..

Yes to the tinned sardines, mackerel, butter & kidney beans and tomatoes plus the ***Gold instant coffee, can't remember the name - fine for instant coffee. Earl Grey tea isn't bad either at @ 50p a box..

Last but not least, the 74% Fin Carre chocolate at 55p is totally lush as is the chocolate covered marzipan in season.

The raspberry jaffa cakes. 59p for a box, real dark chocolate and they are superior to the actual jaffa cakes. There's other flavours too.

They are indeed! :)

Damn-you, I've got the munchies now! :D

 @ this thread!
Spooky I am about to go check out my local Lidl soon after good reviews and lack of funds!

A tip:

Put a coin between the jar and lid, and give it a quick twist to break the vacuum seal.

Works for me!
